Tuning Forks
Posted in Faith Leave a comment
If you had asked me what my favorite subject was when I was in school, I would have said Language Arts.
I loved reading books and writing stories. I still do!
Math and science were subjects I worked hard at in order to do well.
But they were never my favorite.
Occasionally, an experiment in science would intrigue me.
One such experiment has stayed with me all these years.
It involved tuning forks.
Tuning forks are pieces of metal built to vibrate.
They have different pitches.
If you hit a tuning fork, it will make a sound.
You grab the tuning fork to make the vibration stop.
An experiment amazed me that involved two tuning forks, placed side by side.
When one tuning fork was hit, and then grabbed, I could still hear the sound.
Surprisingly, the sound I heard came from the other tuning fork.
How could that be?
Why does the second tuning fork vibrate when the first one is hit?
The vibration of air causes sound. Without air, there is no sound.
Two identical tuning forks have identical vibrations.
Hitting one affects the other when they are side by side.
They resonate with each other.
When a piece of metal was slipped over the end of one of the tuning forks, the results were very different.
The tuning forks were no longer the same.
The pitch was changed.
They no longer had the same resonant frequency.
Now, when one tuning fork was hit, there was no sound coming from the other one because they no longer resonated with each other.
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? (2 Corinthians 6:14)
Just as different tuning forks are unable to resonate, believers yoked with unbelievers are spiritually incompatible.
The two are mismatched.
Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together. (Deuteronomy 22:10)
There is difficulty because the animals have different natures and habits.
God desires that believers marry other believers.
Has not the Lord made them one? In flesh and spirit they are His. And why one? Because He was seeking godly offspring. (Malachi 2:15)
Though believers and unbelievers may get along, and may be able to function well together on many levels, they will never be in agreement where the Lord Jesus is concerned.
When the husband and wife are both believers, Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior.
They stand on the truth of God’s Word.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)
RESONATE!
There is Kingdom work to be done.
We should be praying for our own marriages and the marriages of our children.
We should be praying that God brings believing spouses to our children, so the legacy of faith will continue for generations.
God has work for us to do…dominion work.
Side by side.
Serving Him better together than we ever could serve Him apart.
Resonating.
We must be in tune to do that.
