God’s Symphony
Posted in Worship Leave a comment
Mornings can be so noisy.
Noisy in a good kind of way.
Maybe noisy isn’t the best choice of words.
Maybe symphonic would be better.
This morning, I experienced a symphony of sound.
I never noticed God’s orchestration quite the way I did this morning.
Birds conversing from one side of the street to the other.
Dogs with their distinct bark…making it possible to discern which dog…which house.
Squirrels chattering, squeaking, and clicking as they crack open walnuts.
Owls making their lonely sound, so prevalent at dawn or dusk.
A fly buzzing loudly as it passes by your ear.
I imagined God, the great Conductor…baton in hand.
Lifting His mighty right Hand, He brings His arm down and the music begins.
Perfect rhythm…perfect harmony.
I am outside early in the morning while many houses are still asleep.
I pondered all of this.
What I hear while the world sleeps.
There is something invigorating about being awake when others are still sleeping.
I have always loved that alone time…my morning time…my solitude.
I thought of sleeping people…not just asleep in their beds…but spiritually asleep.
Seemingly wide awake, but walking around in a sleepy fog.
Spiritually sleeping people hear sounds, too.
The sounds they hear are more of a cacophony than a symphony.
Dissonance instead of harmony.
So many sounds vying for attention.
How do you tune out the superfluous voices?
How do you pay attention only to the One that matters?
I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger, in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.
(John 10:1-5)
You pay attention to the Voice that matters when you belong to Him.
The dissonant voices scream and yell.
The white noise becomes a din in the background.
The dissonant voices all sound the same.
But only one voice is recognizable to those who have ears to hear.
His is the Voice that calls to us.
His is the effectual call we cannot run away from.
The call that goes right to our heart.
Melodic…symphonic…harmonious…
The song of those that are awake.
The salvation song.
My heart was weary…thinking of those who are spiritually asleep.
I want to gather them in the concert hall.
I want to put God’s Word in their hands.
I want to remind them, there is no intermission.
Soon, the symphony will begin.
Some will never hear it.
They will never hear the sound of even one note.
Their ears are filled with other sounds.
Some will hear it for the first time.
Can you see the look on their faces?
Can you see the tear that slowly comes down their cheek?
God, the Conductor, is leading.
It is His orchestra.
The music is from another place…the Place we really belong.
The Place where this music began.
God’s symphony.
Only He knows when the last note will sound.
One day His baton will be put down.
When we finally come to the end of His symphony, we realize it has only just begun.
It is just playing in another Place…the Place we were meant to be all along.
The music is eternal…it is glorious.
The music is Him.
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation. (Isaiah 12:2)
