Heart Singing

Posted in Salvation | 2 Comments

My youngest daughter and I were watching an episode of Christy, based on the Catherine Marshall book.
It is the story of Christy, a city girl from Asheville, who goes to the back woods of Tennessee to teach in a mission school.
The stories are wonderful as Christy adjusts to life there…as she learns from the children.

A young girl named Ruby Mae, who helps at the mission, was being teased mercilessly for her appearance and her personal hygiene.

A wonderful dialogue happened between Miss Ida, the pastor’s sister who cooks and serves at the mission, and Ruby Mae.

It don’t matter what them boys said…it don’t matter…them’s just words.

But words hurt...I used to be teased too, Ruby Mae…about other things.

Miss Ida, I want to be little, and pretty, and smell good…like Miss Christy.

Ruby Mae…it is not right that we are told what makes a woman beautiful. A woman can be beautiful like a mountain, or a river, or a flower. Then there is the beauty of service and kindness and compassion…

I know ’bout those things…but I want someone to love me…someone to make my heart sing!

Is is so important that your heart sing, Ruby Mae?

It’s the most important-est thing there is!

That conversation has stayed with me.
How true it is!

What makes your heart sing?

I found myself commenting on a video of a friend’s grandson.
He was laughing that wonderful belly laugh, that only a baby can do.
I found myself saying…What is it about a baby’s laugh that makes my heart sing?

What touches that deep place in our heart?
That deep place…that sometimes takes us by surprise.

Some may say it is love, like Ruby Mae.
Some may say it is virtue, like Miss Ida.
Some may say it is the beauty of nature that makes their heart skip a beat.

Each seemingly different…random…not connected in any way.

But really…all pointing to Him.

That deep place has His image stamped on it.
That deep place is wired for true beauty and fellowship with Him.

When anything comes close to that pure beauty, our heart sings.

Arise my darling, my beautiful one, and come with me. See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come.
(Song of Songs 2:10-12)

The season of singing has come.
Did you know we make God sing?

The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

God SINGS over us!
That thought should stagger our minds!

We are broken, needy, sinful people…yet…we still make God’s heart sing!
He sees us the way we were meant to be…the way He created us.
When we come to faith in Jesus…when we are in Christ, God looks at us and sees His Son.
That is why He sings!

What a chorus of praise!
We sing because we are loved.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

When we believe, and trust in Jesus alone for our salvation, we are redeemed.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!
Let the redeemed of the Lord…sing!

You turned my wailing into dancing; You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to You and not be silent. O Lord, my God, I will give You thanks forever. (Psalm 30:11,12)

Ruby Mae was right…that your heart sings is the most important-est thing there is.

Can you hear the chorus?
Are you singing along?

  1. I resonate with this post! Maybe it’s because it is about Christy – my namesake! But truly when we cling to what God says about us there is no love that is deeper, truer, wider and there is evidence of Him all around us! I’m going to be singing a lot today! Thanks!
