Eternal Melody

Posted in Heaven | 2 Comments

My washer sings.
My oven beeps when it has preheated…my microwave beeps when it is done.
My refrigerator beeps incessantly until I close the door.
That is a good thing if I am unaware that it is opened, but frustrating when I am putting groceries away.

Take notice of your own house.
You know each and every sound…every creak of the floorboards.
You can distinguish which appliance is beeping for your attention.
You know the sound the heater makes….the sound the air conditioner makes.
Those sounds can actually be comforting because there is a predictability to them.

But I was not ready for a washer that sings.
I should say…a washer that plays music.
When the cycle is completed, it plays Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A Major D667.
The song is also known as The Trout.

Obviously, the music is electronic…but my washer plays classical music just the same!
I am almost oblivious to it…until a friend was over and heard the music.
She couldn’t believe it was coming from my washer!

I received an email from a friend who sent me a link to a video.
She said I would be blessed.
That was an understatement!

The setting was Sabadell, Spain.
One lone bass player, in a tuxedo, is standing in the town square.
A little girl throws coins into a top hat that is on the ground.

Soon, a cellist, a bassoonist, and a few string players join him.
Then, as if from out of nowhere, a full string section enters, a percussionist rolling a large drum, a wind section with French horns and trumpets…even a choir.
Finally, a conductor enters the square.

They are playing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony…beautifully.

As the musicians were coming together, so was the crowd.
Many had their smart phones capturing the moment.
They were delighted with the performance before them.
It was simple and pure…played by people who loved music.
Musicians wanting others to love their music, too.

What intrigued me the most were the children.
Their faces priceless as they listened.
Uninhibited…some pretended to be conductors.
Some climbed a lamppost to get a better view.
Some were in their parents arms…showing their parents how to listen like a child.

I was delighted!
Tears came to my eyes as I watched…my throat tightened.
For those few moments, I was in the town square with them.

I looked at the faces in the crowd and saw young people next to old.
Business men next to laborers.
I saw an unlikely pairing of people.
I saw a glimpse of what heaven will be!

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb. (Revelation 6:9,10)

For those moments, as the symphony played, the town square was equalized.
There was no “better than”…no need to keep up with anyone, or compete with anyone.
For those moments, on the level ground of the square, they were simply listeners.
Listening to something outside themselves.

We are not much different.
We are listeners as well, though sometimes we are not very good at it.
We have a magnificent Conductor, who composes and orchestrates…perfectly.

We each have our unique positions in His orchestra…with our own talents.
We play His music now…and not yet.
We want others to hear it…and love what they hear.

We are under the righteous, right Hand of the Conductor.
One day…we will all be playing the same song.

Great and marvelous are Your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. Who will not fear You, O Lord, and bring glory to Your name? For You alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed. (Revelation 15:3,4)

One day, the Town Square will be paved in gold.
The Conductor stands, arm upraised, ready to begin the eternal melody…

The video ended with a father, caught up in the moment lifting his little girl high in the air.
She raises her hand high…to heaven.

Amen.

I have been avoiding putting links on the daily posts, but after the comment below…and the more I thought about it…it was the right thing to do!
As I watched musician after musician joining the orchestra…it reminded me of what heaven will be like…as one by one we come to our eternal home…playing and singing our eternal melody.
Be blessed!
