One Of Those Days

Posted in Daily Living | Leave a comment

Ever have one of those days?
“Those days” just happen.
They are usually not welcome when they do.

It really was a lovely day…a bit busier than usual.
Teach Bible study, lunch with my daughter, go to a meeting…home.

My son and I had afternoon plans.
He is interning with a ministry this summer, and is the drummer for their worship band.
The team has off this week.

We needed to go to a local music store to pick up his drum that was being re-headed.
I never realized how many times drums need to be repaired.
It makes sense, when you think about it, since they take such a beating…literally.

I dropped his drum off yesterday and got the call that the job was completed.
We walked in and they immediately brought out the drum.
Looks brand new…drum head nice and tight…ready to go.

Usually, we put drums in the back of the minivan…in the well.
Then, they won’t move around as we drive.
For whatever reason, we put the drum in the back…on the floor.
We were talking and not paying attention.

The drum moved as we turned a corner.
I turned to adjust it, behind my passenger seat.
I heard a popping sound.

I couldn’t believe it!
The snow scraper that is safely tucked under the back seat was sticking out just enough.
The corner hit the drum head and ripped it.
We were only a block away from the store we just left.

The little town where the store is located is a college town.
The streets are all one-way streets.
You have to drive around, making a large square, to get where you need to go.
We had lost our parking space by this time and had to park a block away.

I walked the block carrying the drum, while my son stayed near the parking meter.
Granted, it was just a snare drum…not a base drum. (thank goodness!)
But a 5’10” woman, walking down a brick street, carrying a drum, was a sight to see!

The store owner was gracious.
The young men working there said they would repair it while I waited.
About forty-five minutes later, I walked out of the store…back down the same brick street…carrying the drum…repaired for the second time!

In the scheme of things, this was just an annoyance.
This was just an inconvenience.
This was one of those…did that really just happen?… moments.

The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. (Romans 8:19-22)

Groaning…Frustration.

When God created the heavens and the earth, He saw that it was good.
When God created man, He said it was very good.

In the idyllic setting of the Garden, the serpent tempted.
Did God really say?
Sin entered the world.
Following closely behind was shame, hiding from God, blame, broken-ness.

We live in a fallen world where things break, weeds grow, people hurt each other.
…groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

But the pain of childbirth is quickly forgotten when the mother looks at her child.
The pain is nothing compared to the joy!

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
(2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

“Those days” are all we can expect to have here!

But soon…

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
(Revelation 21:3,4)

One day…”those days” will end.
One day…a New Day will begin.
