Blue Moon
Posted in Faith 2 Comments
Last week, the moon was spectacular.
I have always been partial to the moon…the lesser light…God’s Word says.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights – the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night.(Genesis 1:14-16)
The incredible full moon, we all saw last week, is known as the Blue Moon.
All the newspapers reported that the Blue Moon is the second full moon in a month.
According to the Maine Farmer’s Almanac of 1937, each season (spring, summer, fall, winter) has three full moons.
When there is a fourth full moon in a season, the third one is called a Blue Moon.
I was fascinated by the pictures of the Blue Moon from all around the world.
Seeing God’s lesser light, shining over all four corners of the earth, made me pause.
When my husband and I were first married, and moved into our little apartment, I was trying to find a job.
I had worked at a bank all through college and thought for sure I would be able to find work at another bank…but they were not hiring.
I always loved to write and was able to do some freelance writing for the local newspaper.
I wrote short vignettes…much like I do now…which were published in the Sunday paper.
My husband circled a job in the classified section of the paper.
Writer needed…for the local television station.
I applied and got an interview.
The job entailed writing voice-over promotional spots before the scheduled program.
I was shown a clip from a thirty minute show and had to write a synopsis.
The announcer would read the promo in the hopes that people would tune in.
After the initial interview process, it came down to two people: someone who already worked at the station in another position…and me.
I was to interview with one of the managers for my final interview.
I had to bring writing samples with me.
The interview went well.
He seemed to like my writing.
He really liked one poem in particular.
He asked if he could make a copy of the poem to show his wife.
I was twenty-two years old at the time.
I felt funny about giving him a copy of my poem.
I remember thinking…what if he gives his wife the poem…as if he wrote it?
I was flattered that he liked the poem…but it seemed like a strange request.
Being young…and not wanting to jeopardize my interview…I gave him the poem.
I got a call, the next day, to tell me they decided to go with the in-house person.
I did not get the job!
I often wondered what happened to my poem.
Did the manager show his wife?
Did he tell her where he got the poem?
Was it published in a book of poetry somewhere?

The view of the captivating Blue Moon filled my windows…filled my skylights.
I remembered my poem…Did I still have a copy of it?
I kept a box with my old report cards, awards, writing…but never thought I would find it.
Last night, I decided to look among those memories.
There it was!
I remember the night I wrote it…
My soon-to-be husband was in college in Georgia…and I was in college in Pennsylvania.
There was a Blue Moon…absolutely gorgeous…filling the night sky with its light.
I was missing him.
The moon that I was looking at…was the same moon he was looking at.
We were just in different places…as we looked.
A Meditation (written in 1980)
The same moon, the same stars, the same sky are seen by both of us.
The rain that falls on me, could very well have been the same rain that fell on you.
An ongoing process, you know…an endless circle.
The fog that lifts and curls around the street lights makes the world seem dim and distant.
But beyond all this, you sit…alone…like I.
Waiting until the rain that falls on me, somehow returns to you.
The miles between us seem to lift with the disappearance of the fog.
And the brilliant sunrise brings a new day to hope and dream…
Of the next moon, the next rain, the next sky.

Isn’t it amazing?
God creates something so spectacular…it can be seen by everyone in the world?
That incredible fact makes the world seem smaller somehow.
There is something else that will be seen by everyone.
It will be a magnificent sight for some…and a dreadful sight for others.
Look, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen.
(Revelation 1:7)
One day, Jesus is coming back.
No one knows the day or the hour…but we are to be watching, waiting…faithful.
The same moon, the same stars, the same sky are seen by both of us…
The same Lord, the same King, the same Savior will be seen by all of us!
Will it be magnificent…or dreadful?
Gina, I loved your poem…thanks for sharing it. I look forward to reading your blog again.
Blessings!
