Post-It Notes

Posted in Daily Living | 2 Comments

On my morning walk, many thoughts come to my mind.
Often, my thoughts expand to something I can write about later that day…or the next day.
So many mornings I wish I had some paper with me to jot down my ideas.
Most mornings they linger with me…unless I meet a neighbor along the way.

Post it notes are a necessity to me!
The perfect size…just the right amount of adhesive…bright colors.
You can literally put them anywhere.

I have a cabinet in my kitchen that is my post-it cabinet.
Reminders of things to do that day, shopping lists…right where I can see it.
It always feels so good to remove a post-it note.
Job done…items purchased…such a sense of accomplishment.

The post-it notes never stay on the cabinet for very long.
They are daily reminders…new every morning!

I have decided that my post-it notes should come with me on my walk.
If I do decide to bring them along, I am in good company!

Jonathan Edwards was one of our country’s finest theologians.
A pastor…a brilliant man, a thinker, a philosopher.
He married Sarah Edwards when he was twenty-four years old and she was seventeen.
They would have eleven children together: eight girls and three boys.

Jonathan would spend thirteen hours a day in his study…preparing sermons…writing.
When he came out of his study, he would sometimes ask his wife to ride horses with him.
As they rode together, Jonathan would discuss his ideas with his wife.
Things he had pondered…and worked on throughout the day.

If he rode alone on horseback, Jonathan would pin small pieces of paper onto his coat.
He numbered the paper according to the subject matter.
On longer journeys, he would come back covered with small pieces of paper.
Returning to his study, Jonathan would systematically remove the papers and write down the thoughts associated with each one.

I imagined myself covered with post-it notes…as I thought of Jonathan Edwards!

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
(2 Corinthians 3:2,3)

We are a letter…“epistole”…an epistle…that is known and read by everybody!
We are God’s letters.
The living letter of our life will show others the Lord Jesus we love and serve.

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

We are God’s workmanship…His masterpiece…poiema…His poems.
We are God’s poems!
Can you imagine?
We rhyme…with a meter that only He determines.

Our lives are read by others.
Our lives are listened to by others.
The epistole and poiema of our lives…the living testimony to the God we serve.

Our lives are letters and poems that are still being written!

Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6)

We are a work in progress…a rough draft.

I enjoy writing.
I never enjoyed all the drafts my writing was required to go through when I was in school.
I never understood why I couldn’t just write my thoughts down on paper…and hand it in.

I’m actually glad that the rough drafts were required.
It made me hone in on some wonderful writing skills I still carry with me today.
I never liked the process, however.

I’m so glad God continues to work on His letters and poems…that are us!
I’m delighted that He fine tunes and sharpens and polishes His masterpiece.
It doesn’t always feel good…as we go through the process.
The final copy…will be exquisite!

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.” (Lamentations 3:22-24)

New every morning.
The final draft is yet to come.
Our living letters and poems are His…to be read and listened to…by all.
What will they say?
