Sent Ones

You recognize it right away when you hear the song.
First few notes and you know it.
There have been many movies made from this TV show.

Mission Impossible.

Just say the words and the song comes to mind.
I don’t remember what night it was on TV…but the opening sequence always intrigued me.
The mission laid out for Mr. Phelps…the tape self-destructs…the show begins.

I can still see myself sitting on the sofa as the song began.
A loud summer thunderstorm competed for my attention.
Suddenly the sky lit up…there was a loud clap of thunder.

Mr. Phelps’ tape was about to self-destruct.
I heard a sizzle.
Sparks, like Fourth of July, came out of the switch plate next to the front door.

I asked my engineer husband to explain what might have happened.
Back then, we had fuses instead of circuit breakers.
When the lightning struck the lamppost outside, it caused a surge in the circuit.
The switch shorted out before the fuse blew.

There you have it!

My mother called the fire department…something about being afraid of fire in the walls.
I was always a bit afraid of thunderstorms when I was young.
This experience solidified that fear for me.

Within minutes, the firemen came up the driveway…axes in hand.
I can remember my mother telling them there was no fire…just sparks.
She didn’t want them to break the walls with their axe.

They never did.
Everything that happened was right in the switch that turned on our lamppost.
Mr. Phelps’ tape self-destructs.
The short in the switch…self-contained.

We, like Jim Phelps have been given a mission.

All authority in heaven and earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28: 18-20)

The Impossible Missions Force (IMF) was a small team of secret agents used for covert missions against evil organizations.

We know the ONE who is sending us out on mission.
We are not secret agents.
We are not sent on a covert mission.

We are called.
We are sent out.
We are thoroughly equipped.
We have our training manual…the Word of God.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
(2 Timothy 16,17)

We go out prepared.
We go out with power.

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.
(Acts 1:8,9)

Satan, the deceiver, tries to thwart our mission at every turn.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12)

Mr. Phelps was told…as always, should you or any of your I.M.Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

How sad for Mr. Phelps.

We will never be disowned by the One who calls us and sends us out on mission.

Whoever acknowledges Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My Father in heaven. But whoever disowns Me before men, I will disown him before My Father in heaven. (Matthew 10:32,33)

There is Good News.
If we are called…we are sealed.
If we are sealed…we are equipped.
If we are equipped…we have the power of the Holy Spirit within us.
If we have the power of the Holy Spirit within us…we will never be disowned.
If we will never be disowned…we have nothing to fear.

The Secretary of IMF gave Mr. Phelps a choice.
…your mission, should you choose to accept it…

Our Lord Jesus does not give those He calls a choice.
We are given a command!
Go and make disciples!

Our mission can only fail if it is done in our own strength.
Done in His strength…and in the power of His Holy Spirit…our mission will never fail!

The results of our mission are in His Hands.
We are simply His agents.
We have an overt mission…for all to see.
We are empowered…to boldly go.
Go and make disciples…more agents…for His mission.

Mission Possible!

  1. Gina I love this! This is very evident to me that you are called to write and make disciples! What an amazing “next step!” God bless you and thank you for being faithful as I ponder my own next steps as our business grows, as our children grow, as all of us grow older and we have all of the “life-on-this-earth issues”‘to face…, we find ourselves looking in the sky anticipating that today IS the day! You have a gift, you are a gift – and a blessing !

    • Debbie,
      Thank you, sweet friend.
Isn’t it exciting that God uses our “little bit” for His glory?
He gifts us uniquely and places us exactly where He needs us to be so that others can see Him reflected in us.
      He uses you greatly!
Soon, we will talk face to face…in the meantime…we pray and press on!
      Gina
