Family Resemblance

Posted in Family Life | 2 Comments

There were two babies born in the past few days.
It is such a blessing to see a tiny new life.
One day here…the day before…on the other side.

Each baby already has siblings.
The parents have been through the miracle of birth before.
I enjoy seeing pictures of the new family.
The siblings getting acquainted with their new brother or sister.

I remember when I brought my second daughter home.
When I went to the hospital to deliver her, I had a little two and a half year old at home.
When I came home with the baby, my two and a half year old looked like a giant!
When did her hands get so big?
Was she always this tall?

It takes a little time to settle into the new role of parents.
It takes a little time to adjust to the new dynamics of the family.
It takes time.

One thing amazes me as I look at the pictures of these precious babies.
There is a family resemblance!
They already look like one of the family!
They have already been part of the family for nine months…as their Mom carried them.

They have the same nose, the same chin, the same hair.
Simply amazing!
From the moment of conception the baby belonged to that family.

From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though he is not far from each one of us. For in Him we live and move and have our being. (Acts 17:26-28)

Our Sovereign God knows best.
He knows the exact family, the exact location, the exact time to be born…for each of us.
Whether born to our natural parents, or adopted into a loving family, God knows best!

We tend to take for granted our family resemblance.
Being adopted, I never knew who I looked like.
I am 5’10″…I was taller than both of my adopted parents.

God was very gracious to me.
Even though I never knew who I looked like, He allowed all my children to look alike.
We all resemble each other.
I do not take the resemblance for granted.

There is another One we should resemble.
Our Lord Jesus.

Do we look like Him?
Can others tell that we are part of His family?
Is there a strong family resemblance?

So I say, live by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want…But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:16,17 and 22,23)

Family Resemblance.

While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, His mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to Him. Someone told Him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” Pointing to His disciples, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother. (Matthew 12:46-50)

We have a family that we are given here on earth.
We have a family that we will spend eternity with in heaven.
We pray that our loved ones here…will join us there.

It is amazing to think that believers through the ages have the same family resemblance.
The same resemblance to their Father.

The Father’s eyes…to see those in need.
The Father’s hands…to reach out and meet those needs.
The Father’s heart…to have compassion on those that do not know Him as Father.

There is even a family Home.

In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am. (John 14:2,3)

A Home.
A Father.
A Family.
Resembling each other for all eternity.
