Two Left Feet
Posted in Christian Worldview Leave a comment
My husband and I are planning to go to our 35th high school reunion in a few weeks.
High school sweethearts…we know the same people…have many of the same memories.
We haven’t been to a reunion in twenty-five years.
I have to admit I did buy a dress for the occasion.
I have been looking for the right shoes to go with the dress.
I found just the pair today.
It is always so much fun to find what you’re looking for on a really good sale!
As I was getting the shoes out of the box to try them on…I remembered.
Years ago, we had a neighbor that was in sales.
He sold athletic shoes….every kind of sneaker you could imagine.
Running shoes, cross training shoes, basketball shoes.
He kept boxes of samples in his car.
He was making his rounds in the city.
He had just parked his car and went in to meet with a customer.
He was talking for a while…wrapping up the sale.
He came outside and saw that his car had been broken into.
All his samples were gone.
Those of us that were listening to him, felt so bad for him.
Until we saw that he was laughing…hysterically laughing!
We had to wait until he composed himself.
Aren’t you upset? Your samples were stolen!
I know…he said, still laughing.
What’s so funny?
They didn’t get much…the boxes only had the left shoe inside.
When the reality of what he said sunk in, we all laughed.
Each of us envisioning the person opening the boxes to find only ONE shoe!
Can’t you relate?
Don’t you feel as if you walk around with two left feet sometime?
A Christian in a postmodern culture.
Steps are awkward…things feel as if they just don’t fit!
How then can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news!” (Romans 10:14,15)
Our two left feet may feel awkward…but if they bring the good news…they are beautiful!
Interpretation and subjectivity define postmodernism.
Beautiful feet, that bring the good news, proclaim the Truth…absolutely!
Left foot…right foot…walking step by step.
Not awkward…but purposeful!
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25)
When it seems as if everyone else is swimming downstream…we are swimming upstream!
When it seems as if everyone else is going along…we are standing firm!
When it seems as if everyone says that truth is indefinable…we know it is absolute!
Left foot…Right foot…standing firm on the Rock!
Postmodernism is a quagmire of ambiguity.
There is nothing firm on which to stand.
Everything is relative; everything is subjective.
In a postmodern culture, two left feet would be just fine.
No one would notice.
Even if they did notice…to each his own.
Jesus talked about Truth.
I have given them Your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth. (John 17:14-17)
Jesus knew that we would feel like we don’t belong here.
We don’t!
This is not our home!
Left foot…Right foot.
Step by step…following Him all the way Home!
