God’s Masterpiece

Posted in Christian Worldview | Leave a comment

I was given a beautiful picture from a sweet little pre-school girl.
She came to my house with her mom holding her picture so proudly.
She drew a picture of a rainbow for me.
She made sure that I saw her name printed on the back of her artwork.

Of course, I hung her picture up right away.
My special gift.
A piece of herself on that paper.

I remember the days when my own children came home with artwork.
Often, the school paint would chip and fall off in flakes before they even got home.
No matter the condition, the paper was displayed prominently.
Our refrigerator was their own personal art gallery.

I gave each of my children a brown grocery bag in those days.
That bag went in their closet.
The bag held everything they brought home from school.
Test papers, work sheets, art work, writing samples.

A school year’s worth of work.
Things rotated on and off the refrigerator and into the bag.
When school ended, the bag was emptied onto the floor of their room.
They saw all they had accomplished and memories came flooding back.

They were instructed to make two piles: the throw away pile and the Mom box pile.
I kept a large file box for each of them.
The Mom box had manila folders for each school year.
They chose the things they wanted to keep and place inside.

Of course, I put my favorites in there as well.
Birthday cards they made for me, special pictures they drew, I love you notes.

The only rule was that the throw away pile had to be bigger than the Mom box pile!
They loved doing this at the end of the school year.
They saw how special their work really was…simply because they did it.

It is impossible for a mother to keep everything…even if she wants to hold onto it.
They each loved to get their Mom box out of my closet and look at it from time to time.

I remember reading once: If God had a refrigerator, your artwork would be on it.

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
(2 Corinthians 3:2,3)

A letter…a poem…a masterpiece.
That is what we are.
Every bit of who we are was made by God’s artistic hand.

Unlike my system, God does not have a throw away pile.
God does not create disposable things!
Imagine my Mom box compared to His God box.
Imagine my refrigerator compared to His.

There is no need to rotate God’s artwork.
He is big enough to take pride in all of His children.
God does not consider one masterpiece more important than another.

Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth He has made mention of my name. He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of His hand He hid me; He made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in His quiver. He said to me, “You are My servant, Israel, in whom I will display My splendor.” (Isaiah 49:1-3)

We are God’s Masterpiece!
We were created to display His splendor!
He has signed His name on all that He has made.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over the whole earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them…God saw all that He had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:26,27,31)

God’s masterpiece…the only created thing that He declared VERY good!
No other created thing bears His image.
A piece of Him is found in every one of us.
God’s Masterpiece for the display of His splendor.

God, the Master Craftsman.
We were all created by the Master…and for the Master…for His Glory.
