The Dance

Posted in Heaven | 1 Comment

There are certain couples that stay in your mind for years.
Something sets them apart.
You watch them; you learn from them; you remember them.

I had a dear friend in high school that would one day be my maid of honor.
I spent a lot of time at her house, with her family, during my high school years.
Her parents were such a sweet couple.

They were years apart in their age, but that never seemed to bother them.
They were ever smiling…always welcoming.
They seemed to enjoy each other’s company tremendously.
It was always a delight to pull up their driveway.

Years ago, there was a musician and bandleader who had his own TV show.
His name was Lawrence Welk and his show was on television from 1955-1982.
Mr. and Mrs. M loved to watch that show.
“Champagne music” it was called.

As I pulled up into her driveway, I could see her parents in the living room.
They were dancing.
No ballroom could have ever been so grand.

Sometimes I would sit for a few minutes and watch her parents dance.
It was wonderful!
I could hear the music playing softly in the background.
They could have danced without any music at all.
The melody was in their heart.

Life is a dance.
Two in tandem…offering a hand…taking a hand.
One leads…one follows.

The beauty of moving together across the dance floor.
Catching a glimpse of your dance partner as if no one else is in the room.
Moving to the beat of the music and adjusting your steps accordingly.

Sometimes, you falter and step on each other’s toes.
Forgiveness.
Grace.
You continue the dance.

He tends the flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those who have young. (Isaiah 40:11)

What an invitation we have received.
Jesus invites us to the Dance.

He sees us.
He calls us.
He extends His nail-scarred Hand.

We take that precious Hand…the wounds incurred for us.
He draws us near.
We can feel our heart beating with His.

He leads.
We follow.
The Eternal Melody plays softly.
He is so beautiful.

We see the scars on His feet.
We move together effortlessly.
We are dancing the Dance that began before the foundation of the world.

There is no better Dance Partner.
There is no better Melody.
We have an eternity to dance together.

You turned my wailing into dancing; You removed my sackcloth and clothed my with joy, that my heart may sing to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever. (Psalm 30:11,12)

I watched Mr. and Mrs. M and studied their example.
They enjoyed each other.
Marriage is a good thing…it is in good hands.
Joy abounded…even when they thought no one was watching.

I want others to see my Dance Partner.
I want them to know that they can be invited to the dance as well.
Jesus has time for them…room for them…abundant love for them.

Can you hear the Eternal Melody?
It wafts softly on the gentle breeze.
It does not lure or coax.
It invites.

He who has ears, let him hear.

Jesus’ Hand is waiting.
You catch a glimpse of your Dance Partner.
Your eyes see only Him…as if no one else is in the room.
Forever.
