Turning and Growing

Posted in Bible | 2 Comments

Today I celebrate fifty-four revolutions around the sun!
That sounds so much more distinguished than saying, it’s my birthday!
Inside, I am still the girl roller skating, jump roping, and riding my purple bike.

My husband’s birthday is in March.
I always like when he is older than me…if only for four months!
I especially like it now!

My oldest daughter heard me lovingly tease her dad about being older.
In preschool, she told her teacher that her mom was married to an older man.
Were they surprised when my husband came to one of the preschool programs!
They looked at me and then at him…we were not at all what they expected.

I remember when my oldest daughter was little, she made my birthday gift.
She loved to do crafts and enjoyed stitching on plastic canvas.
She weaved special yarn through plastic sheets covered with holes.

She wanted to make a special bookmark for my Bible.
She proudly handed me the package that she wrapped herself.

I opened the package carefully, trying to get through the many pieces of tape.
I saw a rectangle with a word stitched across.
WOW…I read…I love it!

Mom, it doesn’t say WOW…she said turning the rectangle the other way.
It says MOM!

The way she wrapped it, and the way I opened it, it looked like WOW!
I hugged her and thanked her for taking the time to stitch this for me.
I told her how wonderful her gift was.
Her amazing bookmark said two things, depending on how you looked at it!

I still have that bookmark in my Bible, all these years later.
I always have it turned in such a way that I can read MOM.
It reminds me that I have been stitched…I have been knitted…very carefully.
I am God-designed.

For You created my inmost being, You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made..
.(Psalm 139:13,14)

My bookmark also speaks to Truth.
God’s Word is Truth.
God’s Word means what God intends it to mean…not what we would like it to mean.

Teach me, O Lord, to follow Your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep Your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of Your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward Your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to Your word. (Psalm 119:33-37)

We try to interpret God’s Word on our own.
I think it means…
To me, God is saying…

Just like WOW really said MOM…God’s Word has an intended purpose and meaning.
When we rely on ourselves for interpretation, there is only ambiguity.
But when we study, and search, and dig deep into God’s Word, we learn what HE means.
Our opinions do not come into consideration.
The Holy Spirit guides us in all Truth.

The creature cannot tell the Creator what He meant to say or do.
The creature stands in awe of what God has said and what God has done.

I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to Your statutes…Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn Your commands. May those who fear You rejoice when they see me, for I have put my hope in Your word.
(Psalm 119:59,73,74)

Turning a bookmark from WOW to MOM.
Turning my heart from myself to God.

The bookmark turning, I can do on my own.
The heart turning is impossible to do by myself.
I need God!

Fifty-four revolutions around the sun.
So many blessings.

As the earth completes its revolution, I continue to grow.

Each year, another revolution around the SON!
The Son who points to the Father…and turns my heart towards Him.

What a reason to celebrate!
