The Delivery Man

Posted in Worship | 4 Comments

I was sitting at my computer writing the next day’s blog post.
I saw the UPS truck come down the street.
I was hoping it might be stopping at my house.

I remembered that the garages were closed.
I went through the laundry room to open the doors.
Sure enough the brown truck was reversing down my driveway.

I stood in the garage and waited.
I didn’t want to seem too anxious.
I knew what was being delivered.

The back door of the truck opened.
I walked slowly towards the door and saw him.
He was not our usual delivery man.

I have some boxes for you.

I know. I’ve been expecting them.
I wondered if I should tell him what is inside.

All of a sudden, the UPS man began to sing.
He had an amazing voice unlike anything I had ever heard before.
I did not recognize the melody.

The words of his song captured me.
I began to ask him what he was singing, but he jumped down off the truck.

I’ve always wanted to be a singer…this is as good a place as any!
Nothing better than to sing about the Lord!

Did you say the Lord?

Yes. Jesus, my Lord and Savior, he said with his hands raised towards heaven.

He is my Lord, too!

He jumped back on the truck and began to sing more loudly this time.
I must have been one of his last stops because the truck was almost empty.
The acoustics inside the truck were magnificent.
His voice was indescribable.

I did not know what he was singing.
It was a melody I never heard before.
Perhaps, it was his own melody; his heart song to the Lord.

He told me he wanted to feed the hungry.
It was as if feeding the hungry was part of everything he did.
He reminded me that is what we are here for.

Do you know what you are delivering in those boxes?
I decided to tell him.
Books. I’ve written a devotional book and it has been published.
I should open a box and give you a copy.

No…I’ll be back!
He jumped back up on the truck and began to sing again.
Heaven on earth proclaimed from the back of a UPS truck.

Love the Lord. That’s what it’s all about!
He closed the door and I heard him singing.

I had a thought as he drove up the driveway.
I won’t see you again.
You were a gift to me…on this day…for a special reason.

I smiled the rest of the afternoon thinking about what God had done.
He sent me a precious message through a UPS man.

The UPS man told me he wanted to feed the hungry.
He reminded me that’s what we’re here for.
Love the Lord. That’s what it’s all about!

Those words reverberated in my soul.
Isn’t that what God has been calling me to do as well?
Feed the hungry souls with His Word.
God took the gift that He gave me and compelled me to use it daily for Him.

After eighteen months of writing this blog, God opened a door for it to be published.
Each day I sit down and write the words that I hear as I listen to His Whispers.

I am simply a vessel that the words flow through.
Word pictures so people will know HIS Word better.
Stories so people will know the Greatest Story ever told.
Connecting memories and daily occurrences so that they point to HIM.

The UPS man reminded me.

I have been so blessed to be able to write down the things I hear and see.
The words feed my own hungry soul and have drawn me closer to the Lord Jesus.
I write them down each day and then release them to Him.

To hear that even one story has impacted someone is so encouraging.
But even if I never knew the reach or the scope of these words, HE does.
This blog is His!
The book is His!

God sent me a gift in the form of a UPS man.
He encouraged me to press on.
He affirmed what I had known all along; though sometimes the doubt clouds the surety.

The UPS man sang in the back of a truck in a voice fit for heaven!
He reminded me of what is important.

Feed the hungry.
That’s what we’re here for.
Love the Lord. That’s what it’s all about!

The Whispers I hear so quietly were loudly proclaimed with heavenly acoustics.
God used a stranger to encourage me.

Do not forget to entertain strangers for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2)

I don’t know who this man was, but I do know he was a gift from God’s hand.

The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

God did sing over me, just when I needed it most, in the form of a UPS man.
