When The Fog Lifts

Posted in Faith | Leave a comment

It was very foggy the other morning.
Fog as thick as pea soup, as the old saying goes.
The kind of fog that required Rudolph’s shiny nose to light the way.

I still walked early that morning.
It was mysterious and eerie, yet beautiful at the same time.
Light from the houses lit the fog in a captivating way.

As I rounded a curve, about a dozen deer ran away at the sound of my footsteps.
The flurry of activity and the sound of their hoofs on the ground startled me.
Even through the fog, I saw their white tails as they ran.

I prayed for the safety of everyone driving that morning.
Headlights seem to light the fog instead of the road.
It is difficult to drive on those mornings.
Commutes seem to take longer than usual.

I had to go out a bit later and was grateful that the dense fog had lifted.
Some fog still remained.
I drove slowly and carefully to my destination.

I was behind a black tow truck.
Through the fog, I could clearly see his tail lights.
We were approaching a traffic light, first yellow then red.

There were people sitting in the back of the tow truck!
It seemed a bit unreal to see them facing me.
This is not the kind of weather for people to be in the back of a truck.
Who rides on the back of a tow truck anyway?

We were stopped at the light and I peered through the fog trying not to be conspicuous.
The heads did not have any bodies!
Two mannequin heads were mounted on the back of the tow truck.
Mounted in such a way that they looked like they were sitting there relaxing.

I gasped at the bodiless heads, but then found myself laughing at the absurdity of it all.
A man and a woman’s head, with nicely styled hair and plastic smiles on their faces.
They were obviously oblivious to the fog!

I don’t think it would have affected me as much if I could have seen clearly.
The fogginess added to the effect.
How I wish I could have met the driver to ask all the questions going through my head.

They came to Bethsaida and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When He had spit on the man’s eyes and put His hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, ” I see people, they look like trees walking around.” Once more Jesus put His hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.  (Mark 8:22-25)

Jesus is always able to heal completely.
The fact that the man saw people as trees at first does not mean Jesus failed to heal him.
The process of seeing is progressive.
We see with our heart a little bit at a time.

Jesus led the blind man out of the village; inevitably more people saw the miracle there.
Jesus wanted the people to realize that He is gradually healing their spiritual sight as well.
The people did not understand who Jesus really was.
Jesus was opening their spiritual eyes gradually so they could see Him more clearly.

Is it hard to see Jesus clearly?
Is it hard to understand who He really is?
Maybe to you, through your spiritual fog, Jesus looks like a tree walking around.

The Holy Spirit opens our eyes and helps us understand God’s Word.
The spiritual fog lifts and you begin to see clearly.
Jesus becomes clearer.

One day we will see Jesus as He really is.
We will fully know Him as we are fully known.
Until then, the spiritual fog is gradually being lifted.
Praise God!

Don’t be upset if you see people looking like trees walking around.
Don’t be upset if you see people on the back of tow trucks.
It will gradually become clearer when the fog lifts!
