Unexplainables
Posted in Faith Leave a comment
We had a dusting of snow even though it is spring.
The wind that usually comes in early March is blowing now.
This is the come in like a lion part, one of my friends said.
Except it should be going out like a lamb by now.
Unexplainable.
Birds flying upward together in a choreographed dance.
Each lifting with the other; each coming down like a corps de ballet.
Each taking their cue to lift, to fly, en masse.
No one bird out-flying another; in sync.
Unexplainable.
Socks that seem to disappear as they go from washer to dryer.
Unmatched, missing its twin, no longer part of a pair.
Socks that went into the laundry and never came out.
Socks that are languishing in some black laundry hole somewhere.
Unexplainable.
A sick child who is inches away from a bathroom, yet throws up on the rug.
Snow or rain that happens right after you get your car washed.
Power that goes out during the one storm when you forget to fill the tub.
The phone rings right when you sit down to read a book.
Unexplainable.
Geese flying in a perfect V-formation.
The dress goes on sale right after you buy it.
The car never makes the funny sound when your husband drives it.
The toddler who never repeats that adorable thing when someone else is watching.
Unexplainable.
In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers to tell him what he dreamed…this is what I have firmly decided: if you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into rubble. But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. (Daniel 2:1,2,3-6)
Unexplainable.
How can anyone tell another man what he dreamed?
How can anyone tell another man the meaning of that elusive dream?
No one was able to interpret King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams.
All of the wise men were to be put to death.
When the king came to Daniel and his three friends, Daniel spoke to the commander.
Daniel went in to see the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends…He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery…during the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven…Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.” The king asked Daniel, “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?” Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician, or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.” (Daniel 2:17-19,26-28)
There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.
The Sovereign God we love and serve.
I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness, the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints. To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:25-27)
All the “unexplainables” that we deal with every day, pale in comparison to God’s mystery.
God’s great mystery: Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Jesus is fully God and fully man. Unexplainable.
Jesus took on the very nature of a servant. Unexplainable.
Jesus Christ came to earth as a man, born of a woman. Unexplainable.
Jesus was a man like us in all things but was without sin. Unexplainable.
Jesus died on the cross, was buried, and rose again three days later. Unexplainable.
Jesus will come back again to judge the living and the dead. Unexplainable.
There will be a new heaven and a new earth. Unexplainable.
We, who are in Christ, will be with Him in heaven forever. Unexplainable.
Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness. Unexplainable.
Jesus left His Holy Spirit as a deposit to guide us in all truth. Unexplainable.
Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father. Unexplainable.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Unexplainable.
These unexplainables are crucial to our faith.
If they could be explained, they would not require faith.
Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith is being sure of the unexplainables.
Sure of them because we are sure of Him.
God does not have to explain anything.
Yet, God is gracious to reveal His plan in His Word.
The unexplainables explained.
Those unexplainables that are not fully explained must be taken in faith.
Trusting the unknown to a known God.
