The Wink

It didn’t take me long to see that my younger son would be a drummer.
Even as a little boy helping me unload the dishwasher, I knew.
It was the glass lid to the corning ware dish that gave me a clue.
It was what happened when I put the lid on the island that gave it away.

The glass lid has a round glass handle.
When I inadvertently put the lid upside down on the island, it wobbled.
It wobbled back and forth quickly before slowing down and coming to a complete stop.
I turned my back for a minute and heard the wobbling sound again.

My son had tipped the lid ever so gently to watch it wobble back and forth.
He was watching the lid but he was also listening.
He was able to exactly duplicate the beat he just heard from the wobbling lid.
His little hands mimicked the sound as he tapped it out on the island.

His first drum set was purchased used; it was very loved.
He still has that drum set stacked in our basement.
He bought another drum set years later and has added cymbals along the way.
He used to drum all the time.

He never had a formal lesson.
He used to go down the basement after school and after dinner to play his drums.
He kept a table next to his drum set with a CD player on it.
He would play various CDs and drum along.

God gifted my son with an incredible ear for music.
He plays guitar as well.
Many days I would come into the house and hear him playing his guitar on the bridge.
The bridge overlooks our foyer and family room and the acoustics are wonderful there.

My son went to Nashville for a semester while he was in college.
A small group of students were chosen for a program that began in January and ended in April.
They were to choose either the business, production, or performance side of the project.
He performed as one of the drummers.

At the end of that semester a CD was produced that included all their original songs.
He is still friends with many of those people.
He has been part of worship ministry for many years.
He even led worship for a ministry a few summers ago.

My son and three other college friends formed a worship band.
Their love for the Lord and the collaboration of their talents has produced much fruit.
An EP, Recycled Love, released in 2015, introduced many people to their music.
A full length CD was being planned.

That full length CD, Father, Son, Holy Ghost was released on February 3, 2017.
On the night of its release, there was a concert at the college they all attended.
It is the college my youngest daughter still attends.
The excitement was growing; I knew how important this album was to all of them.

All day long the excitement was palpable; their record label promoted the album.
The album rose to #9 on the iTunes charts right after its release.
We planned to leave here four hours before the concert was to begin.
My youngest daughter told me that a surprise party for the band had been planned.

Each of the four musicians have other jobs.
Each of them have a passion for the Lord and for worshiping Him through music.
Their soundcheck for the concert that night was to be over by 7:00.
Then they were to head upstairs for the party that none of them knew about.

Family and friends all gathered in an upper room.
The room was filled with balloons and the artwork of their album was hanging on the wall.
There was a cake decorated with their album cover.
There were frames on the table for each of them that we were asked to sign.

Each frame had the actual CD along with the cover displayed side by side.
We were to sign some words of encouragement around the frame.
It was a wonderful gift.
The party took place in a room where musical artists are interviewed before performing.

It was time.
We headed downstairs for the concert to begin.
The Student Union, that had people milling around before we went upstairs, was now packed.
There was not a seat to be had and people were sitting on the floor.

There is a second floor to the Student Union and that was packed as well.
It was a wonderful way to support a band that has its roots at this college.
Some of the songs and concepts were actually written in the practice rooms on campus.
The air in the room was electric.

We had tables put together right in the center near the band.
The mom of the electric guitarist was sitting next to me; we glanced at each other in amazement.
My daughter-in-love moved her seat next to me so she could see her husband better.
Mother and wife were sitting side by side.

The band came onstage to thunderous applause.
Each band member settled in to their positions onstage.
My son was in the back of the stage on his drums.
There we all were; tables of friends and family loving and supporting him.

Behind his full beard, his smile was contagious.
All of a sudden, he saw her; his wife of seven months.
And he winked.
And she knew that wink was for her despite the vast number of people in the room.

That wink warmed my heart.
I sat there watching my son with the perpetual smile on his face.
The same face that I saw all those years ago as he played his drums in the basement.
He is a man but I could still see the little boy.

I remember going to many concerts at school.
I remember when he found us in the crowd.
I remember the little movement he did with his head to let us know he saw us.
I remember the smile and the hugs after the concert.

And now there was a wink for the one that God brought to him.
There was a wink for the one he promised to love and cherish as they covenanted before God.
Did you see him wink at you? I asked his sweet wife.
I did, she said with a tender smile on her face.

He saw her in a room full of people.
He singled her out when thunderous applause from others was all around him.
He acknowledged her, when hundreds of people would love to talk to him.
He knows that she is God’s gift and he cherishes her.

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)

The little boy has grown and taken a wife.
The little boy who exactly duplicated the sound of the wobbling lid is now a master drummer.
The best drummer in the world, his father texted him.
I am biased but I have to agree.

After the concert and all the congratulations, he came over to hug me.
I saw the wink, I said to him.
He laughed with his head back, this little boy with the full man’s beard.
That’s how it should be, I said to him and he understood.

God is using him and his wife for His purposes.
God is using this worship band called, The Evidence, to lead others to Himself.
God is the giver of all good gifts.
That deserves a wink and a Hallelujah.
