He Came
Posted in Christmas Leave a comment
This poem was originally written and published in June 2012.
By request, I am publishing it again for this Christmas season.
Be blessed as you ponder the Truth in the words.
This poem and others can be found in my book, Whispers in Verse.
In a manger with hay
In the night, not the day
God caused His Son to be born.
A young girl would hold
All her arms could enfold
Wrapped in rags that were tattered and torn.
He came not with pomp
Or with grand circumstance
Only the shepherds knew.
But the angels were there
As they sang in the air
Peace on earth to me and to you.
The baby is now
And was evermore
As the star would brilliantly tell.
It hovered above
That stable of love
With only the animal’s smell.
Redeemer and King,
The angels would sing
Creator, Savior, and Lord.
But the town was asleep
With breathing so deep
They were tired and hungry and bored.
Heaven broke through
With a cry in the night
Where before a cow might have been.
He lay in a trough
So old and so rough
For there was no room in the inn.
No room in the hearts
Of many who saw
No room for many who heard.
No room for the Babe
Who came here to save
No room, even still, for His Word.
That Baby he grew
For me and for you
Giving wondrous sight to the blind.
The lame they would leap
As they jumped to their feet
Leaving their old life behind.
He spoke of a kingdom
That dwelled in the heart
Of men that the Father would call.
His way was so new
Yes, for me and for you
No more chains tightly bound from the Fall.
He came here to die
So that men would be free
By His stripes, and by grace, we are healed.
By the blood that was shed
With a crown on His Head
With His Spirit we soon would be sealed.
We who look up
At the star, at the tree
Will never be quite the same.
We ask and converse
Because of His birth
We pray and believe in His Name.
He will come back
And the trumpet will blast
And we wait, as long as it’s Day.
That baby who came
With the powerful Name
Is our Truth, our Light, and our Way.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not understood it…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-5 14)
