Who Is This?

Posted in Faith | 4 Comments

The rain was pouring down in buckets.
The familiar looked unfamiliar through the sheets of water.
I had driven these roads hundreds of times before.
I was driving the roads that take me home.

Water was rushing down the streets like a river.
It would be beautiful if I was not the one driving.
I would have liked to stop and watch the rain.
I would have liked to stop and watch the water moving with a mind of its own.

Level places became filled with water in minutes.
I watched cars go through the pooling water with great caution.
I saw foolish drivers who thought they could drive just like they always do.
The rain and the rushing water always wins.

A squall came up as the disciples and Jesus were in the boat.
The disciples were terrified.
The Lord Jesus rebuked the waves with a Word.
The disciples asked one important question.

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” (Luke 8:22-25)

The sheer power of a storm is something we cannot control.
We are unable to stop the rain from falling.
We are unable to quiet the wind.
We are unable to contain the water as it furiously rushes past us.

Who is this?
That question needs to be answered.
Who is this?
The answer is an important one with eternal significance.

I got to my street and drove down to the fourth house, which is ours.
I turned into the driveway, almost from memory.
The rain was still coming down in torrents.
I saw something at the end of the driveway.

The windshield wipers were moving so fast.
Even at the highest speed, they were struggling to remove the water.
I felt like I should be rubbing my eyes, but my eyes were not the problem.
I saw them at the end of my driveway, looking confused and alone.

I saw three baby fawns.
They were covered with the telltale spots that they will eventually lose as they grow.
They looked at me as I slowly came down the driveway.
They did not move.

Where was their mother?
I inched ever so slowly down the driveway.
They stood there with wide eyes staring back at me.
I wanted to get out of the car and get closer to them, but knew better.

One fawn, who was a little bigger than the other two, darted off.
The other two followed, though not as fast as the first.
They ran to the new swing set my husband built for our grandchildren.
They stayed there for a few minutes until my car got closer to the garage door.

They stood close to the woods.
Something startled them.
They all ran off into the woods.
I wonder if their mother signaled to them in some way.

Who is this?
Who is this God who takes care of the tiniest creature He has made?
The wind and water obey Him.
Everything God has made is under His watchful eye.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:25-34)

Who is this?
This is God.
Creator, Redeemer, Protector, Provider.
LORD.

God, who calms the wind and the water, cares for the smallest creature.
God, who has all things under His control, does not take His eye off of us for a second.
God is mindful of all He has made.
God is tenderhearted to the ones who are made in His image.

That means all of us.
We are all made in the image of God.
Who is this?
Our Creator, Our Lord, and our God.
