In Response To A Song

My granddaughter is a sixteen-month-old helper.
If I am cooking, she is stirring with a metal bowl and spoon.
If I am standing at the counter preparing something, she is right underfoot.
My own children did that, so I am used to it and find it endearing.

When I water my plants, that are still thriving on the deck, she is right with me.
She loves putting her hand under the gentle spray.
She brings her hand to her mouth and tries to lick the water.
She giggles, which makes me giggle.

I know that she likes to help her mommy do the laundry.
She helps take the clothes out of the dryer.
She loves to push the button to turn the dryer on.
When I did laundry, she stood in the kitchen, a bit unsure.

I have made playlists for my granddaughter(s).
I have one playlist with songs my children listened to when they were young.
I have another playlist with contemporary songs that have a beat that she loves.
I have a third playlist that consists of show tunes.

Many of the songs are from Disney movies.
Some are from classic movies like Mary Poppins.
I was putting clothes in the dryer when I heard my granddaughter squeal in delight.
I knew the music was playing but I could not hear the song in the laundry room.

The door between the kitchen and the laundry room was closed over a bit.
I opened it to see what was making my sweet granddaughter so happy.
There she was, in front of the refrigerator, looking up at the ceiling with her arm in the air.
There was a look of sheer joy on her face.

Then I heard it.
I heard the song that delighted her so.
Let’s Go Fly A Kite was playing.
My granddaughter was in the kitchen, but she was flying a kite.

I began to sing along.
I put my arm in the air.
She saw Grandma flying a kite.
We danced around the kitchen flying our kites.

My windows were open.
If anyone had come by and saw us at that very moment.
Our arms were up high.
We were flying our kites with abandon.

I could see my kite flying high in the air.
I waved my arm back and forth so the kite could catch the breeze.
My granddaughter giggled with delight.
Grandma was flying a kite in the kitchen.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20,21)

We cannot even begin to imagine all that God has in store for us.
Everything wonderful in this world will pale in comparison to our Heavenly Home.
We can imagine all sorts of wondrous things.
We cannot out-imagine God.

To my granddaughter, hearing that song meant flying a kite.
Her arm went up in the air.
She looked up towards the kitchen ceiling with a wide smile on her face.
The kite was right there at her fingertips.

When I joined in her play, the kite was at my fingertips as well.
I could see the colors.
I moved in such a way so my kite would catch the breeze.
We were flying kites in the kitchen; no doubt about it.

We have finite imaginations.
God is infinite.
We are tethered to time and space.
God is outside of time since He always was and always will be.

What fun my granddaughter and I had in the kitchen.
We were holding kites that, to the discerning eye, were not there.
But they were!
And they were soaring.

  1. Oh Gina, what blessing to watch again through our grandchildren their minds learning everyday! And a reminder that they copy what we do and say. May the Lord keep us from being stumbling blocks to little ones
