It Happened On A Curve In The Road

Posted in Faith | 6 Comments

It was a normal food shopping day.
Or so I thought.
I left the house early, since I was unable to walk because of the rain.
There was one errand I had to do before I went to the grocery store.

I was listening to a podcast as I was driving.
I needed to drive on a very curvy road.
Even on a clear day, I go slow on this road around all the curves.
I was coming up to the last big curve.

A car coming in the other direction was speeding, in the rain, on that curve.
The car came around the large curve in my lane.
I moved over as far to the right as I possibly could.
The car side swiped me on the driver’s side.

I looked in my side mirror to see if the car stopped after it hit me.
The car did not slow down.
The car sped on and never stopped.
A person driving behind me must have seen the whole thing.

There was no place to safely pull over.
My car was still drive-able.
I pulled into a parking lot of a machine shop.
I almost thought the person behind me would pull in as well, but they never did.

I got out and saw that the side door of my minivan had taken the brunt of the side swipe.
Even my rear hubcap was cracked.
My car was driving fine.
It just looked awful.

I called my husband, who I knew would be in meetings.
He called me right back and asked me to send pictures.
After discussing what happened, he suggested that I drive to our insurance office.
I did just that and began a claim.

When I looked in my side mirror, I remember seeing something red flying across the road.
I assumed it was my tail light.
However, when I checked, my tail lights were intact.
Perhaps it was something from the car that hit me; that car must have damage, too.

Our insurance agent suggested that I make a police report as well.
I did not know how much help I would be, since I could not say what kind of car hit me.
I did not get any license plate number.
All I knew was that the car was some kind of dark colored SUV.

The officer was so kind and took all the information.
He said that he was going to drive to the spot on the road to see if he could find any car parts.
Finding whatever flew across the road could help him identify the car that hit me.
I went to the collision repair shop as well.

The day that was supposed to be out early and home early, turned into being, out all day.
The errand I had to do before I food shopped was just what I needed after the side swiping.
I was in the customer service line waiting to make a return.
There were eight people ahead of me and only one person behind the counter.

In front of me was a little boy holding onto his father’s hand.
The father had piercings, tattoos, long hair, and an eyebrow ring.
He had chains hanging from his pocket.
He was the sweetest father to his little boy.

I watched him as I waited.
I thought about how many people would have dismissed him because of his appearance.
The little boy simply loved his daddy.
The little boy never let go of his hand.

I wondered how the long wait would affect this little boy, who was around four years old.
It was then that they began to play a game.
The little boy began by saying, I spy with my little eye…
All of the things he wanted his daddy to find were easy and close by.

I admit, I was playing along in my mind.
It was the daddy’s turn.
He would end up giving hints to his son, like: It’s very close to you.
Sometimes the little boy was able to guess; sometimes he needed a little help.

I could tell that this father/son relationship was quite special.
Even when they approached the counter, the little boy stayed close to his daddy.
If only the I spy game could have found the person who hit my car.
I spy with my little eye, the dark SUV with front end damage.

It does not work that way.
The person may think they got away with something but there is One who sees.
There is One who is an expert, I spy, player.
Nothing is hidden from His sight.

The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. (Psalm 121:8)

After I was side swiped, I thanked God.
I was not thankful that I was hit.
I was thankful that He protected me from being hit head on.
Even when I talked to the police officer, he said as much.

You’re smiling, the officer said to me.
I’m frustrated that this happened, I told him, but it could have been much worse.
God protected me; my little granddaughter was not in the car seat in the back.
Not everyone would be smiling,
the officer said.

I can smile because God was with me, is with me, and will be with me.
That does not mean that everything goes smoothly, or side swiping never happens.
It means that I do not go through any of this alone.
Ever.

I can smile about that.

  1. Gina, I am glad that you are safe and you were able to drive your care away from the accident. God’s angels were with you to make you have the best possible outcome from a terrible event. It’s a hassle to have to do all of the paperwork after an accident, but you aren’t doing it from a hospital bed! Thank God!

  2. I am thankful you were not hurt or that one of the Grandkids was with you too. God takes care of us. A big hug to you and I’m sorry that it happened.

  3. Happy you’re O K! I can relate to some near misses with cars too. It is so good to know we have God watching over us!
