The Rubik’s Cube
Posted in Daily Living 6 Comments
You could feel the excitement in the air.
It was palpable.
We had prepared for this day for months.
Six of us had prayed, and planned, and waited.
It was the first day of women’s Bible study at church.
It was the first day that a homeschool co-op was going to be joining us.
While the children were in their classrooms, the moms were studying God’s Word together.
It was time to meet these women for whom we had been praying.
The six of us provided a table filled with muffins, fruit, coffee cake, and cookies.
Coffee was ready and waiting.
Autumn napkins and plates were arranged just so.
The six of us gathered to pray before Bible study began.
Two of us greeted the women as they came through the door.
My heart was full as I saw young moms come in with their children.
The moms in the co-op knew each other.
They didn’t know the women from our church…yet.
Most children were excited to run into the gym and see their friends.
There were a few who entered a bit timidly, since this was a new place.
Grandma skills come in handy at such a time.
There is diversion: the fancy hairband, the pretty dress, the cool sneakers they love to show you.
I saw myself all those years ago in the faces of these young moms.
Their hands were full as they carried children, water bottles, their Bible, and belongings.
Their hunger would be satisfied.
They would be fed at the table filled with food; they would be fed with the Word of God.
I saw him standing by himself.
I knew his mom was nearby.
However, in this instant, he was holding his water bottle and looking out the window.
That is a cool shirt, I said to him as he turned towards me.
He looked down at his shirt and smiled.
Is that a Rubik’s Cube? I asked, already knowing the answer.
It’s lots of them, he said, being precise.
Indeed there were a lot of Rubik’s Cubes on his shirt in various states of completion.
That is something I could never do! I said emphatically.
I never understood how to solve that puzzle! I continued.
I guessed that he was probably about five or six years old.
I guessed that he probably had tried and possibly competed the difficult puzzle.
I can’t do it all the time, he said, but my dad can!
He can! I said, hoping he would tell me more.
He can solve it really fast, he continued sounding so proud of his dad.
Do you watch him so you know how to do it? I asked.
You got to get the white, here, and then here, and then here, he said twisting his hands.
I watched as an imaginary Rubik’s Cube was being solved before my eyes.
You got to keep your eye on the white square all the time, he explained.
It still sounds pretty hard to me, I said, meaning it.
At that moment, someone came up and needed to ask me something.
By the time I finished, the little boy had gone off to his classroom.
I thought about what he said.
I can’t do it all the time, but my dad can!
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
How many times do we come to our Heavenly Father overwhelmed?
How many times do we feel like a puzzle being turned this way and that with no clear answers?
What is our response?
Do we throw up our hands and wave a flag of surrender?
There is something we can say in our exasperation.
We can say what the little boy said.
I can’t do this, but my Dad can.
Our Abba, Father, can do all things.
We may twist and turn trying to figure it out ourselves.
We may try to solve our problems on our own.
But we have a Father who loves us and loves when we come to Him.
Too often we come to Him as a last resort, after our striving has proven unsuccessful.
May we be more like that little boy.
May we admit that we don’t know how to do it.
We don’t know how to solve the problem before us.
I can’t do it all the time, but my Dad can!
My Father can!
Wow Gina,
This is only the second post of yours that I have read. Once again, our God has given you a marvelous insite, and all from the comment by a little boy. Your obedience in serving Him through this women’s bible study and showing love to a little boy standing by himself, was rewarded with another powerful insight from our Father! I praise Him for using you in such a wonderful way.
What an encouragement to me to start writing again. I plan on spending much more time exploring your website. Thanks!

Tish,
Thank you for your encouraging words. If each of us can spur one another on in our giftedness, for His Glory, then what we do is never in vain. Blessings to you as you begin to write again. I would like to read your words as well.

This is great! Thank you for loving those kids and the moms, too! Seeing all this come to fruition on Wednesday was like a weight lifted! I continue to pray that Bible study blesses the young moms like it did for me when my boys were smaller. Thank you for loving and praying together with me for hearts to be changed and relationships strengthened through the study of our Fathers word! ❤️❤️❤️
Elizabeth, it was your foresight that saw the beautiful pairing of both groups of women. My heart is full. God is moving. How can hearts not be changed? It is so exciting to be a part of this each Wednesday and beyond.

Frank and I really enjoyed this writing. Your love for “little ones” shines through clearly. We were blessed! Nancy
Thank you, Nancy! I am so delighted that you and Frank were blessed. I have a heart for young moms and their children. It is such a blessing to be a part of all that God is doing.
