Weariness

Posted in Poetry | Leave a comment

This Whisper was originally published on March 4, 2013.
For the rest of the week, the daily Whisper will be taken from the archives.
The truth is still the same and needs to be revisited.

Do you ever just feel weary,
And you really don’t know why?
Can’t put your finger on it.
Wouldn’t even try.

Can’t explain the emptiness,
That’s way down in your soul.
Can’t understand the outlook,
You feel buried in a hole.

It would be quite justified,
If something wasn’t right.
But when nothing is the matter,
When no reason is in sight?

Could it be the dreariness,
Of cold, gray, winter days?
Could it be the sunless skies,
When uninvited, stays?

What to do when you wake up,
And tears are very near?
What to do when inside you,
Lament is all you hear?

Nothing to complain about.
That’s just a waste of time.
To finally say, Mood go away!
Out of the rut, you climb.

The ruts of our own making.
The ruts we fall into.
We can’t pull up our bootstraps.
Oh Lord, how we need You!

You, the Lifter of our head.
You, the Morning Star.
You, the gentle Shepherd.
You, the Door ajar.

Only You can get us out,
Of the quagmire deep within.
Only You can find us.
Only You know where we’ve been.

This world can be a wilderness.
Without a map to guide.
We can’t get out, not on our own.
We need You by our side.

Lift us high above the doldrums.
Lift us high above the fray.
Turn our eyes towards You.
The Truth, the Life, the Way.

Our perspective will begin to change,
When we put our eyes on You.
When we concentrate on what is great,
And good, and right, and true.

Heavy hearts will come and go,
Without explaining why.
Knowing Who has died for you.
The One who reigns on high.

Advocate. Redeemer.
Arbitrator. Friend.
Savior who has died for you.
On Him you can depend.

To have Your yoke upon us,
Not to push against the goads.
We will follow where You lead us.
On this narrow Kingdom road.

Feelings are fickle.
Feelings are important, God given gifts.
They should not be the determiner of our actions.
Feelings cannot be trusted.
They change depending on weather, amount of sleep, our hunger, and our health.

Now faith is being sure if what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
(Hebrews 11:1)

We like empirical data, things we can measure, things we can get our hands on.
We trust our feelings when, in reality, feelings can’t be trusted.

We need to know what we know and stand on that, no matter how we feel.

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, asking for help. “Lord”, he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering. Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.” The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go’ and he goes and that one, ‘Come’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this’ and he does it. When Jesus heard this, He was astonished and said to those following Him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith”…Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! it will be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that very hour.
(Matthew 8:5-10,13)

For all intents and purposes, the centurion’s servant was going to die.
What if the centurion allowed his feelings and not his faith to dictate his actions?
What’s the use?
He’ll never get well.

The centurion had faith in Jesus.
He trusted Jesus believing that He had the power and the compassion to heal.
The centurion took Jesus at His Word.
The centurion knew what he knew and stood on it.
The centurion had faith despite how things appeared.

Faith over Feelings, always.

Jesus was amazed at the centurion’s faith.
That kind of faith still amazes Him.

When was the last time you amazed Jesus?
