Drama In the Middle Of The Night
Posted in Faith 4 Comments
I woke up at 3:30am.
I reached over to check the time on my phone.
In my sleepiness, I hit the Instagram icon and a cooking video started to play.
I quickly tried to turn the video off so it wouldn’t wake up my husband.
Suddenly, I saw that I had inadvertently dialed the emergency SOS on my phone.
I heard a voice.
In my half awake state, I thought it was dialing 911.
I heard the dial sound and I heard a voice.
I stopped the call.
It was still dialing.
I canceled the call.
I felt like I was pushing buttons randomly trying desperately to end it.
Finally, my attempts to end the call were successful.
However, my phone screen was lit.
Words ran across the top of the screen.
NOTIFICATION CANCELLED.
I tried to scroll up so the words would go away.
Nothing.
I tried to turn my phone off to clear the notification.
Nothing.
My phone was locked.
At this point, I couldn’t fall back to sleep.
I was sure that the police were going to knock on our door.
I decided to get up and go downstairs.
My husband was blissfully asleep through all of this.
He was able to sleep even through the alarm that went off on my phone when I called the SOS.
I turned on the light over the kitchen island.
I got out my computer and went to work.
I googled the reason for the notification and the locked screen.
I read articles about how to force restart your iPhone.
I followed the instructions.
Nothing.
I decided to contact Apple support.
It was now 4:00 in the morning.
I decided that the police were not going to come.
I messaged the support team through my computer.
For one hour, the kind person on the other end walked me through steps I could take.
Come on, Gina, you can do this, the person wrote to me after many unsuccessful attempts.
By 5:00 in the morning, I knew that nothing was working.
The Apple support person set up an appointment to have a technician look at my phone.
I decided that I would go back to bed for at least an hour.
To my surprise, I fell asleep, still weary from all that happened.
I got up at 6:30 and came downstairs and messaged my family through my computer.
I told them what happened and suggested they call or text their dad if they needed me.
My son had suggestions for me to try, which were the same as the Apple support suggested.
My son couldn’t understand why the force restart wasn’t working.
Neither could I.
I knew I had a full day ahead of me without my phone but with an appointment to fix it.
My husband had gotten up and read the text I sent to everyone.
He came downstairs.
Why didn’t you wake me up and ask for help? He asked me.
He held our his hand for my phone.
Please don’t do anything that will delete all my data, I said to him.
He knew better than to answer my protestations after the night I had.
I explained all that had happened and what I was trying to do.
Did you try taking off your phone case? He asked as he proceeded to pull off the case.
I saw him pushing the same buttons on each side of the phone that I tried during the night.
He said nothing.
He just stared down at the phone.
He was looking intently at the screen.
I looked at him inquisitively.
He turned the screen towards me.
I saw the Apple logo in the center.
It was the same allusive Apple logo that was supposed to appear all those hours before.
How did you do that? I said amazed.
You like these thick cases to protect your phone but they get in the way of something like this.
Oh! I said, too weary to say more.
All night long I attempted to do what he did in a few minutes.
It’s the engineer brain, he said and I knew he was right.
Engineers think about why the problem exists and come up with ways to solve it.
He was right; I’ve seen him do that many times throughout our married life.
He sent out an emoji to the family after I texted them that their dad solved the problem.
The emoji simply said, TECH GENIUS.
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
I thought about my husband’s quick solution to a problem I tried to handle myself.
If I had just woken him up and asked him in the middle of the night.
He would have helped me.
He would have solved the problem and removed needless worry.
It is no different with God.
We try desperately to do things ourselves.
We only make things worse and add needless stress and worry to our situation.
God never needs to be woken up; He is always there, always willing and ready to help us.
Ask Him.
Quit striving.
Stop taking everything on yourself when it is often too big for you to handle.
I am saying this to myself as a much needed lesson.
What a wonderful story!! Oh how we need each other! We each bring such different skills to the table! Well Done- Tech Genius!! Gina, this is a great parallel to how desperate we need to seek God for the answers that elude us!!
Thank you, Lorna. I have been pondering the lessons I learned. God is able. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. If we just remembered…
Blessings,
Gina
Hi Gina, I probably would have done the same thing especially thinking the police were going to be at my door. I wouldn’t have wanted to wake up my husband either for something like that. I usually leave my phone on my dining room table when I go to bed. Just like your husband mine would have solved it in a minute. So you are not alone, and I too have to remember to ask our heavenly Father for help.
Michelle,
I am so glad I am not alone in this!
Our God is able.
Gina
