Self Image

It was an early morning.
I needed to go to the car shop to get my inspection stickers replaced.
The old ones were cut out when the new windshield was installed the other day.

I offered to drive my daughter to high school since my son has the car they share.
I left the house at 7:00 in the morning.
I didn’t get a chance to walk and knew that the day would be busy.

Ordinary Days

I sit here at my computer and write as a massive manhunt is happening in Boston.
A search is ongoing for one of the suspects involved in the Boston Marathon bombing.
Boston is literally shut down and the region of Watertown is completely shut off.
Federal, state, and local authorities are engaged in a coordinated effort to bring this situation to an end.

I think of the families in the area…mothers with their children…essentially on lock down.
Days before, parents could guard their children’s hearts and eyes from the violence.
But today…with armored vehicles and weapons all around them…a glance out their windows brings all of this too close to home.

God’s Masterpiece

I was given a beautiful picture from a sweet little pre-school girl.
She came to my house with her mom holding her picture so proudly.
She drew a picture of a rainbow for me.
She made sure that I saw her name printed on the back of her artwork.

Of course, I hung her picture up right away.
My special gift.
A piece of herself on that paper.

Conflation

Vanity was a problem for the emperor.
All he wanted to do was display his fine clothes.
He hired two tailors who promised to make him the finest garments.
Clothes made out of a fabric that was invisible.
Invisible to anyone who is unfit for his position or hopelessly stupid.

The two tailors were dishonest.
They pretended to make the new clothes, and pretended to dress the emperor in them.
The emperor couldn’t wait to parade in front of the people wearing his new clothes.
This caused a dilemma for the people.

What’s In A Name?

I thought of a quote from Shakespeare today.
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose,
By any other name would smell as sweet.

The quote is from Romeo and Juliet.
Juliet argues that it doesn’t matter what something is called…It matters what is.

I saw this demonstrated in this precious little boy.

Wanting and Waiting

I read something that I have been tumbling in my mind.
The first advertisement for a credit card in the UK had an interesting slogan.
It read: Takes the Waiting out of Wanting.

Our country is drowning in debt.
We manage our personal checkbooks with care.
What if we managed our household budget the way the government manages its budget?
Entitlements…special interest groups…everyone wants everything now!

What is so terrible about waiting?

The Ancient Paths

I don’t know why I was thinking about the ice cream truck.
Maybe because I did our weekly food shopping and ice cream was on sale.
I remember that truck so vividly.
Mr. Softee.
He came conveniently every night at a time when most families had just finished dinner.

You could hear his merry go round type music before you could see his truck.
It was such a treat to be allowed to buy ice cream from him.
He would always have a line in front of his service window.
He was the truck driver and the ice cream proprietor, all in one.

Creativity

I received a special blessing after Sunday church services.
A precious young girl came up to me with some papers in her hand.
She was giving me one of her stories.
What she was really giving me was her heart.

This young girl is homeschooled.
She is very bright…very precocious.
She knows that I love to write and told me that she writes stories, too.
I mentioned that I would love to read one of her stories sometime.

From The Heart

We have an all-news radio station…KYW News Radio.
I have been listening to that station each morning since I was a girl.
Growing up, it was the best way to listen for school numbers on a snowy morning.
You listened in anticipation…waiting for your three digit number to be announced.

All these years later, I am still listening in the morning as I get dressed.
Give us twenty minutes and we’ll give you the world…is their tag line.
Weather, traffic, word news, local news…at predictable times each hour.
You don’t even have to think about it…traffic on the two’s.

Go Ahead And Blush

Anyone who knows me, knows that I like to wear lipstick.
Nothing too dark…or garish…but a nice color to brighten my face.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I always have a tube of lipstick in my purse, one at my dressing table, and one in my desk drawer in the kitchen.

Ask any woman.
She will tell you there is always one thing she will never leave the house without!
Lipstick is my one thing!
