Precious Life Unseen

I had forgotten about this sweet story until my youngest daughter and I decided to reminisce and watch the DVD the other night.
I then pulled out our copy of the book and reread the wonderful story.

Since he is an elephant, Horton has large ears.
They are large enough to hear sounds that no one else can hear.
As he was in the pool, Horton heard a faint sound…a sound of someone calling for help.
Upon further investigation, he discovers that a small speck of dust was calling to him.

Elf In the Classroom

It was one of those special days.
Special because as a mother of five, one on one time must be planned.
It doesn’t matter the age, having special time…just the two of us…is so important!

My daughter, the second grade teacher, had an appointment this afternoon.
She had lunch with me before she went.

Two Left Feet

My husband and I are planning to go to our 35th high school reunion in a few weeks.
High school sweethearts…we know the same people…have many of the same memories.
We haven’t been to a reunion in twenty five years.

I have to admit I did buy a dress for the occasion.
I have been looking for the right shoes to go with the dress.
I found just the pair today.
It is always so much fun to find what you’re looking for on a really good sale!

Outward Appearances

I enjoy seeing our Christmas tree.
I am the first one downstairs in the morning.
I go right over to the tree and turn on the lights.

There is something about the ambiance of the room when a Christmas tree is lit.
The soft glow…the smell of pine.
I could linger there all morning.

The Suitcase

I am not a traveler.
Whenever I go anywhere, I pack much more than I need.
I never understood how people could pack so little and do just fine.
My husband and oldest daughter are efficient packers.

My husband has learned the knack of folding things in a certain way to maximize space.
My daughter, who was an athlete in high school and college, can get a week’s worth of clothes in a duffel bag.
I have yet to learn the art of packing.

Black Friday

Black Friday.
As a little girl, I remember the day after Thanksgiving had the thickest newspaper.
It was filled with sale supplements…before the days of internet and shop at home.

Black Friday always sounded so ominous to me…before I knew what it actually meant.
Black Friday is the name given to the day following Thanksgiving.
It signifies the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

Sight

I went to a small college and commuted to classes each day.
I worked at a bank during college, so not living on campus allowed me to get to my job.
A continuing education program started while I was there.
Many older students came to class…also commuters…with lives beyond the classroom.

Such diverse backgrounds….such wisdom to be gleaned.
Women who had raised a family and came back to get their degree.
Others who had been in the workforce…finally getting the degree that eluded them.

Ballot Casting

How I wish I was a second grader right now.
My daughter is doing some exciting things in her classroom.
Election Day is tomorrow.
Claire has been teaching her students about the election process.
They will even have a mock election.

What intrigued me most was how she taught them about campaigns.
The children voted for a classroom monitor.
The two candidates were Cookie Monster and Count von Count.

Solomonic Wisdom

Today was Bible study day.
I have the privilege of teaching women the Word of God.
It is an awesome responsibility that I do not take lightly.

We have been studying the Gospels.
First the Gospel of John, then Luke, then Mark, and now Matthew.
Some of us have been together now for four years.
God continues to bring new women each year as well.

Sound Bites

My early years were the days of black and white television.
When I was about ten years old, we got our first colored TV.
Back then, it was more a piece of furniture than a television.
The screen was so small compared to the large case that surrounded it.

I remember watching The Wizard of Oz and actually seeing the yellow brick road…yellow!
Turning on the TV would always take a few minutes.
The grown-up in the room explained, Just wait…it needs to warm up first.
TV tubes would blow out…a service man needed to be called.

Modernity!
