The Pin

I always like to look at the pins they wear on their aprons.
It is fun to read them as I stand in line at the grocery store.
Some cashiers have many.
Some have only a few.

It brings me back to the days when I wore pins.
I wore quite a lot of them.
It was the only thing that was allowed to be different.
It was the only way to express myself, within reason.

The Fawn

I saw the fawn on the road.
It was dead.
It had been hit by a car.
Blood encircled the fawn like a wreath.

I could see the spots that are the tell-tale sign of its age.
I wondered if the driver even knew they hit the fawn.
I wondered if it happened during the early morning hours.
I wondered how the mother deer must be feeling.

Too Nice

Posted in Daily Living | 2 Comments

I remember the red box.
It was on the shelf in my closet.
The closet was in the bedroom I had when I was a girl.
I could not think of a time when the box was not there.

Other things were on top of the box.
The box was long and rectangular in shape.
I remember the day I got a foot stool so I could take it down and open it.
I wanted to know what was inside.

Up In The Tree

Posted in Daily Living | 2 Comments

It was a lovely summer night.
The humidity was much lower.
The air was a bit cooler.
It was the perfect kind of night to eat dinner on the deck.

Some people eat outside every night.
However, me and humidity are not friends.
Early morning is delightful on my deck or my side porch.
However the heat of the day is something I choose to avoid.

Sugar Water

Posted in Daily Living | 6 Comments

It has a been a month of refreshment.
I have never taken off an entire month before.
I wondered if I would miss the daily discipline of putting thoughts to paper.
Actually, if truth be told, putting thoughts to keyboard.

The rest was necessary.
One of the four weeks was a family vacation in North Carolina.
Then there was the blessing of watching one of our granddaughters for another week.
There were surprise birthday parties for friends to attend; there was time to be still.

Memory Triggers

I saw a picture that someone posted right before the 4th of July.
It brought back so many memories.
Under the picture were a few words.
This is how we celebrated the 4th of July.

The picture was so familiar to me.
Anyone my age would remember.
The picture was of a bike wheel.
Just looking at the picture brought a sound to mind.

Pay Attention

We all look for bargains.
We watch for sales on the things we need to buy.
We appreciate discounts at our favorite stores.
We try to be wise with our spending.

I pondered this as I was walking.
I realized that there is something that is quite costly to us.
Perhaps that is why it is often so difficult to do.
We say the phrase all the time without thinking.

What Will They Remember?

A family, that we love and are very close to, has four boys.
Those boys spent a lot of time in our home.
I enjoyed watching them when their mother had things to do.
I enjoyed seeing their Lego creations and the way they played with our toys.

I was thinking of the boys the other day, remembering something sweet they used to do.
We all went to the same church during those years.
There was always a time of greeting at the beginning of the service.
It was then they did something from their heart that still brings a smile to my face.

The Voice That Matters

Posted in Daily Living | 1 Comment

I heard them in the dressing room across from me.
How does this look, Mom? A young girl’s voice asked.
It makes you look fat, her mother answered.
Hearing those words was as if someone punched me.

Perhaps the outfit was not flattering on her daughter.
There had to be another way to say it.
There had to be another way to get her point across.
There was no kindness in the mother’s voice.

Pride In Her Work

Posted in Daily Living | 2 Comments

My youngest daughter and I had a lunch date planned.
We were trying a restaurant that we had never been to before.
It was an organic, farm to table restaurant.
It was our kind of place.

We talked about all sorts of wonderful things.
I love one-on-one time with my children so I can really hear their hearts.
I love that one-on-one time with my in-loves as well, whenever I get the chance.
I look forward to that same kind of time with my grandchildren when they get older.
