Judging Crooked Lines

It was grocery shopping day.
I knew what I would be doing for the next hour and a half.
I don’t mind; it has been my weekly routine for years.
It is not the choosing that is tedious but rather the bagging and the putting away.

I was at an intersection where both the left and right lanes can turn left.
I was in the right lane and another minivan was in the left.
The light turned green and we each started to go.

The Coat

It is beginning to get chilly here.
It is time to wear a coat.
I like cold weather, so I never mind pulling out the winter things.
If your favorite season is summer, the next few months are not enjoyable for you.

I remember a coat that my husband gave to me back when we were in college.
It was a short jacket with a faux fur look.
It was a jacket to wear on special occasions.
It was a typical 80’s style jacket.

Memories Of A Diner

Posted in Daily Living | 2 Comments

We all went out to dinner the night before my daughter’s birthday.
She chose an Italian restaurant that does not accept reservations or call-ahead seating.
We people-watched a bit, seeing a few people we knew.
We talked through a glass window to a little boy who thought we were entertaining.
His parents were delighted that we kept him occupied during the wait.

We had a pager that vibrates and lights up when your table is ready.
Everyone pretended not to look, but we all checked the pager just in case.
It seemed like everyone was eating out that night.
The wait didn’t matter as long as we were together.

Pebbles and Ripples

I was making a liverwurst sandwich today and thought of your mom!
Either she introduced me to it or I liked the way she smeared it on the bread.
Either way, I’ve been eating it ever since then.
A happy random thought on a Tuesday!

This sweet message was waiting for me when I checked my personal Facebook page.
It was written by a friend of mine from grade school and high school.
We lived on the same street when we were girls and have just recently reconnected.

The Brevity Of Childhood

Posted in Daily Living | 2 Comments

It is a strange feeling when your youngest child turns 18 years old.
Still a teenager, but yet an adult.
Did I listen when seasoned mothers told me about the brevity of childhood?
Probably not, because it has caught me by surprise each time.

Most mothers can list the times they fell short.
The times they were too tired to play one more game of Candy Land.
The times when that favorite book just cannot be read one more time.
The times when ten more minutes of cuddling is set aside because bedtime calls.

Memory Lane

When good friends get together, they are bound to travel down memory lane.
It is good to travel there; it is not good to park there.
Being with our college friends this past weekend reminded me of things I had forgotten.

When we were married, our first TV belonged to the cook of my husband’s fraternity.
It was small and was only a black and white set.
Until we bought our own, this little one did just fine.
Since we did not have cable, watching TV meant adjusting the rabbit ears antenna.

Tongue Suppressor

I have a cold and cough.
It happens when the weather changes.
Hot tea and rest will help me feel like myself again.

I enjoy singing as I drive.
It sounds very different when I have a cold.
My speaking voice sounds different, too.
It’s not permanent, though while it lingers, it is annoying.

Holy Greeting

Wednesday morning is Bible study morning.
It is a privilege to teach the women the Word of God.
If truth be told, I probably learn more than they do.
Preparing for our class helps me grow in my faith.

Today was also the Harvest Party for the Preschool.
Little ones walking through the halls dressed in farmer attire.
There were scarecrows and the occasional ballerina, who dances in the fields no less.

Dodge Ball

Children’s games.
We have all played them.
That is where we learned about rules and taking turns; about winning and losing.

Games like: Hide and Seek, Mother, May I, Red Light-Green Light and Tag.
Monkey in the Middle, which I enjoyed as I grew taller, and of course Dodge Ball.

Dodge Ball had its own challenges and rules of conduct.
No aiming for the head.
No hitting below the belt.
There are certain areas that were fine to hit, and certain areas that were off limits.

Lipstick

Posted in Daily Living | 4 Comments

Anyone who knows me well knows that I like to wear lipstick.
I have my favorite color at my dressing table, in my purse, and in my desk drawer.
Every woman has her one thing that she will not go out of the house without.
Lipstick is mine.

I will quickly put some on after dinner, before I answer the door, and throughout the day.
It just brightens my face…or so I think!
The grayer my hair became, the more I needed my lipstick and my scarves!
