Patina

It’s that time of year.
Time to get out the deck furniture that has been stored away for the winter.
I love to see the glass table, the comfy chairs, and the market umbrella set up.
They invite me to sit for a while…to have dinner outside.

The furniture out of hibernation.
What stories they could tell.
The friends that have come over, the conversations as we lingered after a meal.
Spring is here!

Free To Be Near

I heard her mom call to her.
I heard her tiny voice answer.
She was only over at the next register…looking at something.

Come back over here, please. Mommy needs to see you. You need to be near me.

The precious little three year old was carrying a plastic doll.
I saw more of the same hanging at our register, too.
The little girl obeyed, and proceeded to kneel down in front of the display.
They were on the very bottom shelf…perfect for little eyes for see…and little hands to find.

A Little Steeping

There’s nothing better than homemade iced tea.
Every other day I have to make another pitcher.
It is almost like the Goldilocks’ story for me…not too sweet…not too tart.
Just right!

Tea bags are added to the water after it boils.
The tea must steep for a while.
The amount of time depends on how strong you like your tea, and the type of tea you use.
After the desired time, lemon and sugar are added.
Everything is stirred together and ready to enjoy.

Kitchen Tables

My kitchen table has stories to tell.
Conversations to share.
The laughing, crying, games that were played.
All the love that has happened there.

My kitchen table saw many a meal.
The benches around it all filled.
Birthdays, holidays, no special reason,
The clean-ups, the milk that was spilled.

Come Alongside

A young couple came to our church on Sunday.
They are still newlyweds…two years married.
They are expecting their first child this summer.
They are building a house…which will be ready this spring.

I knew the husband from when he was a little boy.
I have watched him grow into a fine, Godly man.

I stood there listening and watching and remembering.
They are now where I once was.
I have walked where they are now walking.

Sprinkled People

There she was.
I saw her as soon as I walked into the store.
My sweet sister in the Lord.
I wanted to buy a laminated map of the Holy Land for Bible study this week.
She is working at the Christian store I visited this afternoon.

How wonderful to see her familiar face!
As we were talking, another sweet sister in the Lord came up to us.
Two for the price of one…I teased!

A-Ha Moment

How wonderful when everyone is home!
That is how it has been for the past five days.
Meals, fellowship, conversations…just being together.
It is a gift that I don’t take for granted!

I love to watch and listen to my five children relate to each other.
Even though they are adults, there is still the same brother and sister dynamics.
That is a good thing.
The stories…they each can finish.
The friendly teasing…the inside jokes…the remembering!

Sent Ones

You recognize it right away when you hear the song.
First few notes and you know it.
There has been many movies made from this TV show.

Mission Impossible.

Just say the words and the song comes to mind.
I don’t remember what night it was on TV…but the opening sequence always intrigued me.
The mission laid out for Mr. Phelps…the tape self destructs…the show begins.

The Difference

When people come to visit, there is one compliment I love to hear.
It has nothing to do with decorating styles or furniture choices.
It has nothing to do with whether they enjoyed the food.
It is simply: There is something different about your home!

That something different is nothing that deserves a pat on the back.
That something different is nothing I can buy at the store, or manufacture on my own.
That something different is the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Chronicler

I was thinking about my aunt today…the one I cared for…my mother’s younger sister.
She was a story teller.
If she wasn’t telling a story…she was singing.
A bit of the Irish in her!

My favorite stories were about her life during the Depression.
She and her two sisters would sit on the marble steps of their Philadelphia home.
They had to be creative and make their own fun in those days.
