The Pile

I could see it as I opened the blinds in the bedroom.
I could see something odd beyond the end of our driveway.
It was our trash and recycling day.
I noticed that the trash truck had already come.

The trash is always picked up before 7:00 am.
I saw our large trashcan moved neatly to the side.
The recycling, along with some flattened boxes, had yet to be picked up.
Whatever I was seeing was not on our lawn but rather on the street.

The Distinguishing Mark

I was given a gift many years ago that still hangs in my kitchen.
It is a primitive heart painted with a checkerboard pattern.
It has raffia ribbon tied at the top.
It has one important hook right at the center of the heart.

This primitive heart came with accessories.
There are twelve accessories to be exact.
These twelve pieces are hung on the hook in the center of the heart.
Each piece is placed on the hook at the beginning of the month.

Fort Building

I teach Bible study in my home every other Wednesday.
It is a joy and a privilege to have the women here so we can dive into the Word of God together.
Some of the young mothers have small children who come to my home as well.
I have hired two, sweet home-schooled girls to care for them.

The children come in and know immediately where the basement door is located.
They know that the toys are waiting for them.
The same toys that my children played with all those years ago.
The same toys that I rotate each time they come, so they always have something different.

The Right Shoes

I think we can safely say that women have more shoes than men.
Women have shoes that go with a specific outfit.
Women have casual shoes, dress shoes, and walking shoes.
Women’s shoes are as much a fashion statement as the actual outfit itself.

If you asked women they would admit that many of their shoes are not comfortable.
A woman will admit that she bought the shoes for the way they looked, not the way they feel.
A woman will have her go-to comfortable shoes.
A woman will have her standard sneaker, which is not just for exercise.

Shoulder To Shoulder

Posted in Evangelism | 2 Comments

Our oldest son moved to Washington, DC one year ago.
He was beginning to work at a law firm.
After three years of law school and one year of clerking in federal court, he was ready to begin.
My husband sees him whenever he goes to Washington, DC on business.

For me, it is another story.
I wanted to give him time to settle in before I went down to see him.
However, about a month after he moved there, our daughter became engaged.
Two weeks after her engagement, our youngest son got engaged.

The Landmark

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am directionally challenged.
I cannot read a map.
I need landmarks to point me in the right direction.
I am an auditory person rather than a visual person so that is part of the problem.

It is not a problem for me, since I am used to it.
It is a problem for others who think that giving me a map is going to help me in any way.
Visual people do not understand auditory people.
We are an enigma and we are a minority.

You Just Might Get Wet

How I wanted a fountain pen.
I was in elementary school, in the fourth grade.
The year before we had learned cursive writing; now everything was to be written that way.
I laid out all my arguments as to why a fountain pen would help me write cursive better.

I wanted a blue fountain pen.
I also wanted a pack of extra ink cartridges.
I already knew how to change the ink cartridge.
I watched other people replace the ink in their own pens.

In The Checkout Line

Do you ever think about the fact that we walk around on autopilot?
Take for instance the question we hear and ask about a hundred times a day.
How are you?
The question is innocent enough except few of us wait for the answer.

How are you? Has become the greeting of choice.
It is similar to, It looks like rain.
It is said without really expecting a response.
It is a nicety, a courtesy; it is our go-to question.

The Bag Ladies

Paper or plastic?
That is the question that is always asked of me whenever I go to the grocery store.
I always request both paper and plastic because it is sturdier.
Through the years cashiers have voiced their opinion about what is better for the environment.

Paper bags waste trees, was one argument I have heard.
Plastic bags do not degrade in the landfill, was another argument that was voiced.
The cashier does not know that I use the paper bags to empty wastebaskets.
The cashier does not know that the paper bags are used to cover books.
