The Gift Of Weeds

Posted in Worship | 4 Comments

There it was.
A beautiful field…a meadow really.
Filled with delicate yellow flowers.

A sight for sore eyes.
Upon closer inspection; however, the beautiful yellow flowers were weeds.
How can something with such a negative connotation be so pretty?

Weeds.
That insidious nuisance that takes over your garden.
The tenacious weeds that pop up out of spite.

Coin Wars

Posted in Worship | 2 Comments

I found a penny on the ground.
Shiny copper…glistening in the morning sun.
It was turned heads up.
Abraham Lincoln looking as stately as ever.

I enjoy finding pennies.
Some may think that is silly.

The Threshold

We step over it many times a day.
People come up to it, when they want to approach us.
We may even be carried over it, on our wedding day.

The doorstep.
The threshold.

For many, the threshold is the line to be crossed.
Family members step over it with ease.
Good friends are able to cross it without so much as a knock at the door.

On The Other Side Of Needs

She stepped up to the microphone,
Gave a preface to her song.
Sang it many times before,
Never heard it all along.

Sang the words as only words,
With never any heart.
After going to Africa,
They tore her heart apart.

One Year Ago

Posted in Worship | 4 Comments

It is hard to believe that one year ago today I published my first blog post.
The first of many Whispers.
What a journey it has been!

I have loved to write for as long as I can remember.
There were many times when I was confused as to where I should put my writing.
The church I attended for ten years used to have a monthly newsletter.
On the back page, of this multi-page publication, I was asked to write devotionals.

Reflection

Today, I sat in my little church,
In the pew I always do.
Preparing my heart for worship,
The cross always in my view.

A simple cross, that’s made of brass.
Yet, meaning so much more.
When I looked at the cross today, I sensed,
I had never seen it before.

Perspective

Posted in Worship | 2 Comments

The other night, I walked out to the mailbox to get our mail.
I had forgotten to get the mail earlier that afternoon.
I didn’t want it to sit in the mailbox all night long.

I bundled up, since the temperature has been in the single digits.
The moon was incredibly bright…almost full.
It lit up the driveway and the front lawn.
The shadows of the trees were beautiful silhouettes against the sky.

Not So Silent Night

Posted in Worship | Leave a comment

My girls and I had our lovely mother-daughter day this past weekend.
Each year we set aside the second Saturday of December and do something special.
We have gone to New York and had a carriage ride around Central Park.
We have gone into Philadelphia to see the Nutcracker.

This year we spent the afternoon and evening at Longwood Gardens.

The Absurdity Of The Gift

Posted in Worship | Leave a comment

In our house birthdays are special celebrations.
The birthday flag is hung up outside…the birthday banner is hung across the mantle.
Birthday signs are scattered throughout the house…and on the person’s bedroom door.
The YOU ARE SPECIAL plate is used!

Presents go in the special place in the family room.
A “just right” balloon is chosen to attach to the presents.
The birthday person gets to pick their special dinner…homemade or a favorite restaurant.
The evening ends with the Gallagher homemade birthday cake: chocolate chip/sour cream.

Finding Him In the Strangest Places

Posted in Worship | Leave a comment

I volunteered in my daughter’s second grade class today.
I have been in her classroom before and I thoroughly enjoy the children.
They call me Mrs. G…some give me hugs when I get there…and when I leave.

Today was their Thanksgiving celebration.
Two second grade classes participated and rotated between six different stations.
One station made corn husk dolls…another made rain sticks.
