A Tube Of Lipstick

I was in the checkout line and was thoroughly enjoying the British accent of the cashier.
I listened to the way she made the most common words sound like music.
When my items were the ones she was scanning, she began to talk to me.
Love the look, she said pleasantly.

I thought she meant the look of a shirt I was buying.
I commented that it was a good price.
I don’t mean the shirt; I mean YOUR look!
I must have looked a bit confused.

Those Little Scary Moments

Posted in Faith | 2 Comments

We have had two of our granddaughters here for a long weekend.
It has been delightfully busy.
It has been so enjoyable to read books, play together, and sing songs.
They are wonderful activities for a 3 1/2 year old and an 8 month old.

Television is not a go-to activity.
However, it is delightful to sit together and watch something short and sweet.
The other day, my granddaughter asked if she could watch Winnie the Pooh.
Since we do not have the channel that has all those movies, renting it was in order.

God’s Bellows

Posted in Faith | 2 Comments

I enjoy lighting the candle in my kitchen.
There is one candle fragrance I choose all the time.
It seems to be my home’s signature smell.
The scent is simply called, Country Store.

To imagine what it smells like, you have to imagine walking into a country store.
Scents will greet you as soon as you open the door.
The description says: a tangy blend of rose hips, oranges, apples, cinnamon, and spices.
It is a scent that feels like home.

Shoes By The Door

Our back stairs are being used again for an interesting purpose.
When my children were young, they each had their own back stair.
It was not assigned to them.
It just sort of became their step because of age and height.

Each child had a step on which he/she put their shoes.
I never wanted the shoes on the inside mat, since it made opening the door a problem.
The back stairs was the perfect place to put their shoes when they came home.
Since they often went up and down the stairs that way, their shoes were right there.

Yesterday’s News

I enjoy going to thrift shops every once in a while.
I like to find odd things for my home: old tins, crocks, and Revere Ware pots and pans.
When I need to rejuvenate my spirit, I drive to the place of Amish buggies.
That is where one of my favorite thrift shops is located.

I donate clothes and household items there.
On those donation days, I always stop inside, going first to their antique room.
Then I head upstairs, where there I find housewares, fabric, toys and Amish quilts.
It was on a visit a few days ago that I saw them.

He Came

This Whisper was originally published on December 22, 2012.

Are you done all your shopping?
Did you send out your cards?
Did you wrap all the presents?
Finding boxes was hard.

Did you hang up the stockings?
Did you trim the large tree?
Did you bake favorite cookies?
Are there any for me?

Baby On The Move

Posted in Family Life | 2 Comments

My grandson will be one-year-old right after the New Year.
This means he is on the verge of walking.
With four granddaughters, having a grandson is wonderfully different.
The expression, all boy, comes to mind.

Electric cords appear like shiny objects to him.
If there is a tiny space between a table and chair, he will find it and enter it.
If there is something to climb, he will.
I love every minute of his curiosity.

A Martha Thanksgiving

My daughter and her husband came in the house.
They were laden with the typical things you carry when arriving with three children.
The sweet potato casserole she made for our dinner was in a special zipped carrier.
The children went off to play.

After unloading most of her things, my daughter handed me a pile of cards.
The cards were made out of construction paper of various colors.
On each card was written the names of everyone sitting at our table that evening.
The handwriting was that of my oldest granddaughter who is 4 1/2 years old.

Sand And Glitter

I went to the grocery store early this week.
I didn’t want to go shopping close to Thanksgiving.
I try to get things I need for the Thanksgiving meal the few weeks before.
Therefore, the week of Thanksgiving, only the last minute incidentals are needed.

The grocery store was quite busy.
The shelves in my market were well stocked.
I am thankful for the independent grocers who sell local produce and meat.
Everyone was cheerful and there was a bit of anticipation in the air.
