A Martha Thanksgiving

My daughter and her husband came in the house.
They were laden with the typical things you carry when arriving with three children.
The sweet potato casserole she made for our dinner was in a special zipped carrier.
The children went off to play.

After unloading most of her things, my daughter handed me a pile of cards.
The cards were made out of construction paper of various colors.
On each card was written the names of everyone sitting at our table that evening.
The handwriting was that of my oldest granddaughter who is 4 1/2 years old.

Sand And Glitter

I went to the grocery store early this week.
I didn’t want to go shopping close to Thanksgiving.
I try to get things I need for the Thanksgiving meal the few weeks before.
Therefore, the week of Thanksgiving, only the last minute incidentals are needed.

The grocery store was quite busy.
The shelves in my market were well stocked.
I am thankful for the independent grocers who sell local produce and meat.
Everyone was cheerful and there was a bit of anticipation in the air.

The Touch Of A Child

I was two rows behind them.
We were all standing in church, singing in worship.
The words of the songs were on the screen in front.
It is good to worship the Lord together.

I have known the woman in front of me for many years.
Our daughters played sports together in high school.
She was sitting with her husband and two grandsons.
I know she has a lovely voice because I have heard her sing special music from time to time.

Signs Of Life

I was thinking about song lyrics.
It was from the album, Signs of Life, by Steven Curtis Chapman.
I used to play it in the car as I drove  my children here and there.
One stanza in particular kept repeating in my mind.

Now I’ve got crayons rolling around in the floorboard of my car
Bicycles all over my driveway, bats and balls all over my yard
And there’s a plastic man from outer space sitting in my chair
The signs of life are everywhere

Making The Book Your Own

Posted in Bible | Leave a comment

There are many bookcases in my house.
The living room alone has four large bookcases and one small one, which are filled with books.
The books used to go in the same direction with their spines nice and straight.
Now some books are placed horizontally on top of the vertical ones.

I never thought I would have books going in different directions on my bookshelves.
Not because I want them all nice and neat, exactly.
I just never imagined I would have so many books that they demanded to go every which way.
To a reader like me, that is a good problem to have.

Lesson In Innocence

Posted in Daily Living | 2 Comments

Another day, another excursion.
On this particular day, we went to Longwood Gardens.
I brought my daughter and her three children.
It was a gorgeous fall day, perfect for walking around the Gardens.

Since I am a member of the Gardens, I can bring someone with me each time I visit.
My grandchildren are admitted for free, since they are young.
I knew we would be doing a lot of walking, but at a much slower pace.
With my grandson in a stroller, the rest of us walked around in wonder.

An Afternoon At The Theatre

Posted in Family Life | 6 Comments

Some people think that buying children things is the best kind of gift.
Of course, there are special things that, when given, means so much to them.
However, spending time together is far better.
Making memories is a longer lasting gift.

I try to find things that my granddaughters will enjoy.
My one grandson and littlest granddaughter are not even one year old yet.
Finding things that the older three will love is important to me.
Months ago, I found just such a thing.

The Missed Weekend

Beginning today, there will be Weekly Whispers, which will be published each Tuesday.

We try to go to one college football game each year.
My college didn’t have a football team.
So the one game we go to each year is my husband’s college football team.
We usually go in October and we typically drive.

Waiting For Me

I needed to bring something over to my daughter.
I planned to stop by before I headed out to lunch at a friend’s house.
I texted my daughter when I was leaving.
I reminded her that I couldn’t stay very long.

The reminder wasn’t for her as much as for my grandchildren.
My two granddaughters are always excited when Grandma came over.
Their brother, my grandson is excited to see me as well.
However, at nine months old, he can’t anticipate the visit like his sisters.
