The Milk Can

Posted in Family Life | 2 Comments

Sometimes I hesitate to mention anything that needs to be fixed around the house.
I hesitate, because my husband acts on the twenty-four hour rule.
Nothing can sit undone or broken for more than twenty-four hours.
I ask and he fixes it.

That is a huge blessing.
He will literally drop what he is doing to do whatever needs to be done.
I do not take him for granted.
I truly appreciate his care.

With Abandon

Posted in Worship | Leave a comment

About forty minutes from my home, just a short drive away, are beautiful botanical gardens.
Many years ago, my children gave me a membership to the gardens as a Mother’s Day present.
I have renewed that membership every year since.
It is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

I have met friends at the gardens for lunch.
I have taken others during Christmas when the gardens are transformed with millions of lights.
I promise myself that I will go to the gardens more often and simply walk on the gorgeous paths.
The solitude, among all that beauty, is good for my soul.

The Cool Kids Table

Posted in Heaven | 2 Comments

There’s nothing special about the table.
We’ve had it for quite a while.
Some of my own children used it.
It was the perfect size for little hands and feet.

The table is blue on the outside edges.
It is faux wood across the top, which makes it easy to wipe clean.
There are two chairs that came with the table.
There is a small pocket on each end of the table to hold pencils, crayons, or treasures.

A Journey Of Music

Posted in Worship | Leave a comment

I was trying to select some music to listen to the other morning.
There were so many choices.
There were playlists already made for me.
There were music suggestions based on music I’ve already chosen.

My son, daughter-in-love, and two of my granddaughters were here as well.
I said what I was thinking out loud.
I want my albums back again, I said planning to think those words in my head.
I know what you mean, Mom, my son said, and I knew he understood.

Telling Stories

Posted in Faith | 2 Comments

I have had the privilege of spending time with my grandchildren.
Many end of the year school activities are happening.
Some, I am able to attend.
Others, allow me to help my daughter with some children while she attends things with others.

Going outside is always a wonderful thing to do with children.
Thankfully, all of my grandchildren love to be outside.
Reading books to them is this Grandma’s favorite thing to do.
However, something I decided to do on a whim has become something they request.

Sleepover And So Much More

We all take sleep for granted.
We assume, when our head hits the pillow, we will fall blissfully and soundly asleep.
For many, sleep is allusive.
For children, sleep is as varied as each unique child.

As an only child, I never had to share a room.
I commuted to college and worked during the week, so I never lived in a dorm.
The first time I shared a room was when I got married.
There were many adjustments in that first year.

Hearing A Cry

Posted in Family Life | 2 Comments

In the span of a month, four of our six grandchildren have their birthdays.
The oldest one will soon be six-years-old.
The youngest one will soon be six-months-old.
The four birthdays, happening in a month’s time, all happen to be granddaughters.

The April birthday girl just turned four-years-old.
The May birthdays will be turning five, two, and six-years-old respectively.
Four little girls, six and under, are a joy to see.
Princesses, unicorns, dress-up clothes, necklaces, and bracelets are the way of things, it seems.

The Bike Helmet

Remember when you were little and got something new?
It was so special.
It was carried with you every minute of the day.
It was even put in your bed at night.

Children latch on to things.
Security?
Comfort?
Sense of ownership?

From A Child’s Eye View

Posted in Faith | 2 Comments

Mothers often complain about the placement of items in a grocery store.
Things are placed quite strategically on the shelves.
That strategic placement is done with children in mind.
To our grown up height, this is rarely a problem.

Often the sugary cereals are placed much lower right in view of the children.
Candy, near the check out, has a prominent place for those who are much smaller than us.
It is a marketing strategy that is down to a science.
In order to combat that trend, a mother has to stand firm and get the healthier options.

Drawing With Chalk

Two of my granddaughters are here for the next four days.
One is almost five-years-old and the other is almost two-years-old.
It is delightful to have them here.
It is wonderful to see the world from their eyes.

I have said those words before but now they have a different meaning for me.

My oldest daughter came over to see them and brought the girls outside for a bit.
It was helpful to me because it enabled me to make dinner.
I was in the kitchen cooking and getting ready to feed all of us.
I gathered things that needed to go into recycling.
