Little Feet Under The Piano

Posted in Evangelism | 4 Comments

My son sent a text to the family.
He was telling all of us that his four-and-a-half year old daughter was taking piano lessons.
Her teacher is a young woman with an obvious love of both children and music.
Lessons are basic and introductory, but the motivation to learn to play is there.

My son and daughter-in-love are very musical.
Music is always heard in their house.
Their two daughters cannot help but be surrounded by it.
They are catching their Mommy and Daddy’s enthusiasm and the sheer joy of music.

Poems and Trees

Posted in Faith | 2 Comments

New houses are being built at the end of my street.
They will be at the end of my street and across the road.
Across the road and on bucolic, open land.
Open land that had steer, which often came to the fence and looked at me on my walk.

My walk has been a bit shorter after my knee issue last spring.
I am gradually getting my distance and speed up to where it was before.
So much has changed in the landscape during that time.
I am sure the houses will be lovely, complete with a walking trail, but I miss the old view.

The Innkeeper

Posted in Christmas | 2 Comments

We have all been there.
I’m sorry; we are not taking any more reservations.
Tickets are sold out!
No vacancy!

It is a horrible feeling, realizing you are too late.
You have the feeling of being passed by.
You second-guess your timing.
You kick yourself for not acting sooner.

Don’t Miss Him

Posted in Poetry | Leave a comment

Are you done your shopping?
Did you send your cards?
Did you wrap the presents?
Finding boxes was hard.

Did you hang your stockings?
Did you trim the tree?
Did you bake some cookies?
Are there any for me?

A Conversation At The Coffee Shop

Posted in Evangelism | 2 Comments

It’s a tricky thing to tell a story.
Get your facts wrong and the story is untrue.
Get your facts right, but tell it in the first person, and you may get too close to self promotion.
Tell the story just right and, prayerfully, it blesses many.

My dear friend and I went to a local coffee shop.
We usually talk weekly and pray on the phone.
With my new grandbaby and the Thanksgiving holiday, it had been a while since we talked.
I knew we would be sitting at the table in the coffee shop for hours.

Set Apart Sounds

Posted in Prayer | Leave a comment

I have a triangular dinner bell that hangs on a column near my kitchen.
It was not used to call my family to dinner, since I didn’t have it then.
I actually bought it to call the women who come to my home for Bible study.
I always have coffee or tea and something baked so they can fellowship for a while.

However, I needed a way to let them know we were about to begin.
It was a gentle way to say, It’s time!
My voice was not loud enough to get their attention while they were talking to each other.
The bell had a sound that was set apart from the din of conversation.

The One In The Glass

Posted in Bible | Leave a comment

I have an Audible account and absolutely love it.
I am a voracious reader.
I used to love to read aloud to my children and now to my grandchildren.
Being read to, as I listen to a book on Audible, is just so wonderful.

I have listened to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit as well.
I have listened to all the James Herriot books.
I have listened to classics like Jane Eyre and most of the Jane Austen books.
However, my favorites were book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote Anne of Green Gables.

The Name On The Library Card

Posted in Heaven | Leave a comment

What a day it was when I walked into the library in my hometown and got my library card.
Signing the card, in the presence of the librarian, made me feel so grown up and so proud.
I carried that card in my little girl wallet as if I was carrying valuable treasure.
Words my mother had said  so often rang in my ears.

You are never without a friend when you have a book to read.
Those words came to mind only last week, when I said them to my oldest granddaughter.
What does that mean, Grandma?
It means you’re never lonely, and the characters in the books become your friends.

Choosing A Pair Of Shoes

Posted in Evangelism | 2 Comments

When I was a little girl, getting new shoes was so exciting.
Those were the days of shoe stores and small benches with an incline on which to put your foot.
Those were the days of shoe salesmen who went to the back room to bring out the size you needed.
The mysterious back room, from which boxes of every shoe you could desire, came.

The shoe salesman removed your shoe and actually put the new shoe on your feet.
You had to wear socks or tights for sanitary reasons.
You could never try on shoes if you were barefoot.
To this day, I still hold onto those same rules.
